PINE BLUFF, Ark. - Prairie View A&M punched its ticket to the SWAC Tournament as they split a doubleheader with Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday, April 26.
In game one, Brittanie Gardner and Rachel Rodriguez combined for six hits as the Lady Panthers claimed a 5-2 victory.
A UAPB fielding error allowed PVAMU to strike first as Brenicia Woods scored from second. Rodriguez opened the fourth with a single and scored the game's second run on a UAPB throwing error which also allowed Jazmine Hicks to reach base. Several batters later, Gardner moved PVAMU ahead 4-0 with a two-RBI double.
UAPB drew to within 4-2 after the fifth but a dropped fly ball by UAPB in the sixth allowed another run by PVAMU which turned into the final score as PVAMU held UAPB scoreless from that point.
Gardner finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs while Rodriguez finished 3-for-3. Olivia Lacewell improved to 3-1 as she went the distance.
For the second time in the series, PVAMU saw a last-inning lead evaporate as UAPB scored twice in the seventh to claim a 5-4 win.
A solo homer by Woods in the second gave PVAMU a 1-0 lead followed by Gardner's leadoff triple which turned into a 2-0 lead in the fourth as she scored on a throwing error. Woods upped the lead to 3-0 with her second homer of the game also in the fourth.
UAPB tied the contest at 3-all in the fourth via a three-run home run. PVAMU battled back in the seventh and moved on top 4-3 on Alexandra Losoya's RBI single which scored Hicks. However, the lead was brief as UAPB scored twice in the seventh with the latter coming via dropped fly ball with the bases loaded.
Woods finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs while Monica Cartwright took the loss despite a six-strikeout performance.
The team now turns its attention to the postseason as PVAMU will participate in the SWAC Tournament next week in Decatur, Ala. The Lady Panthers enter as the No. 3 seed from the SWAC West.
