Lady Panthers overwhelm Jackson State 82-65

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Jeanette Jackson scored 22 points to lead four Prairie View A&M players scoring in double-figures Saturday as the Lady Panthers overpowered Jackson State 82-65.

Shamiya Brooks tallied her second consecutive double-double for the Lady Panthers with 10 points and 10 rebounds while fellow frontliner Asha Hampton-Finch scored 10 first-half points to set an individual season high. PVAMU guard Lamaria Cole added 15 points and handed out a team-best four assists. Brooks also blocked five shots, which tied her season best set earlier this season at Texas A&M.

Prairie View A&M (5-11) won its second Southwestern Athletic Conference game in as many tries, and improved its league record to 2-2.

Ke'ra St. John and Ayanna Hardy-Fuller scored 13 points apiece for Jackson State (5-11, 2-3 SWAC). The Lady Tigers dropped their third consecutive game after winning their first two SWAC contests two weeks ago.

The Lady Panthers were in control of the game practically from start to finish. The visitors led 7-4 three and half minutes into the contest, but an 8-0 Prairie View A&M run between the 16:20 and 13:06 marks of the first half gave the Lady Panthers a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the game.

Prairie View A&M muscled its way to victory despite being outrebounded by the top offensive rebounding team in the conference. Jackson State outrebounded their hosts 48-39, and held a 21-10 advantage in offensive rebounds. However, the Lady Tigers became the first team to lose to Prairie View A&M this season in a game where they held the rebounding advantage.

Entering Saturday's game, Jackson State topped the SWAC by grabbing 16.4 offensive rebounds per game. They also led the conference in offensive rebounding percentage, getting 36.5 percent of their missed shots back.

But the Lady Panthers proved that you can be outrebounded and still win if you are making your field goals and free throws. Prairie View A&M shot 41 percent (23 of 56) from the floor, it's third highest percentage against an NCAA Division I opponent this season. The Lady Panthers also took advantage of their many trips to free throw line, making 34 out of 42 charity shots, good for an 81 percent showing.

Jackson, a senior guard from Las Vegas, Nev. (Sierra Vista HS), was a frequent visitor to the free throw line. She shot made 15 out of her 17 free throw attempts, which was one off her career best for made free throws, set earlier this season when she went 16-of-22 from the line against then-No. 11 North Carolina.

Cole's all-around strong performance also included securing five rebounds, which marked a collegiate career high. Her previous best was four rebounds, which she accomplished while at Kansas in a game against Creighton on Nov. 17, 2013.

A chippy game made a lot of the free throw visits for both teams necessary. Three technical fouls were also called in the second half, though nobody from either side was ejected.

The Lady Tigers would make it a one-possession game when Tiana Pollnitz knocked down a jumper with four minutes remaining in the first half to cut PVAMU's lead to 28-25. From there, the Lady Panthers would finish the half by outscoring their guests 12-4 and taking a 40-29 lead into halftime.

Prairie View A&M didn't waste time after halftime putting the game out of reach. Jackson capped an 8-0 Lady Panthers run between the 15:29 and 14:10 marks with a layup and a foul that gave the home team its first 20-point lead at 54-34.

Jackson State would cut the lead to single digits at 72-63 with 3:07 left to play in the second half, but the Lady Panthers finished the game on a 10-2 run.

The Lady Panthers return to action Monday when they host Grambling State for a 5:30 tipoff. Both games of Monday's doubleheader will be broadcast on the SWAC Digital Network.
