Prairie View A&M captured its first winning streak of the season as they controlled the contest from start-to-finish in a 74-60 victory over Grambling State in the Baby Dome on Monday night.
Prairie View wasted no time in setting the tone as they raced out to an early 14-2 lead behind the strength of six points from senior guard Montrael Scott. Defensively, the Panthers had the Tiger offense in a state of confusion early on as they forced five turnovers in the first eight minutes coupled with a 1-for-8 shooting performance. After a GSU trey by Isiah Patterson, the Panthers kept the momentum up as they outhustled the Tigers on both ends of the court which resulted in several easy transition baskets in addition to flawless offensive execution.
However, Grambling State began to settle down after PVAMU's run and started to heat up as they went on a 10-3 run to close within 26-20 with 4:20 on the clock. Prairie View A&M would regroup after the Tiger surge and return to form they displayed early in the first half as they outscored GSU 10-1 over the final 4:13 to claim a 36-21 halftime lead.
Grambling State started the second half on a 7-1 run to close within 11 (39-28) less than two minutes in. The Tigers would keep threatening to draw within single digits from that point but the Panthers did just enough on both ends of the court to keep them at bay over the next 16 minutes. With 2:33 left in the game, Grambling State cracked the single digit barrier as Mark Gray scored on a three-point play the old-fashioned way to draw within 68-60. On the ensuing possession, PVAMU crashed the boards aggressively with a pair of offensive rebounds and put GSU away for good as Karim York scored on a putback for a 70-60 advantage.
Scott led PVAMU with 16 points while Reggis Onwukamuche followed with 15 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Jayrn Johnson had his third straight game in double figures with 13 points and two steals.
PVAMU is back in action on Saturday afternoon as they'll face Mississippi Valley State at 4 p.m. in Greenwood, Miss.
