Lady Panthers put five-game win streak on the line against Alabama A&M

The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers return home to complete the first round of league play against the Southwestern Athletic Conference's teams from the state of Alabama. The Lady Panthers host Alabama A&M on Saturday, and then turn around to face Alabama State on Monday. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. as part of a SWAC doubleheader. Both games can be heard on KPVU 91.3 FM, and will be shown on PantherVision.

Prairie View A&M (8-11, 5-2 SWAC) enters Saturday's contest on a five-game winning streak, the longest for the Lady Panthers this season. The women from "The Hill" enjoyed two convincing wins on the road last week, defeating Mississippi Valley State 78-61 last Saturday, and then winning 83-66 at Arkansas–Pine Bluff two days later.

The Alabama A&M Lady Bulldogs (4-14) enter the contest with a record of 3-4 in SWAC play. The Lady Panthers have swept the season series from Alabama A&M in each of the last two seasons. Janie Myles' 14.4 points per game leads the Lady Bulldogs.

Last time out …
  • The Lady Panthers won their fifth consecutive game Monday, defeating Arkansas–Pine Bluff 83-66 to complete a weekend road sweep. Jeanette Jackson scored 20 points and handed out six assists. She also become the first Lady Panther this season to register five steals in game.
  • Shamiya Brooks came off the bench and posted her fifth consecutive double-double, scoring 12 points and pulling in a game-high 14 rebounds. Alexus Parker also recorded her first double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Her 11 rebounds and five assists in the game marked career highs.
  • Shaneece Stephens tied a career high with 13 points, which she set only two days prior in Prairie View A&M's win at Mississippi Valley State.
  • The Lady Panthers shot 43 percent (30 of 70) from the floor, which marked their best shooting performance on the road this season. Their best showing on the road came just two days prior across the Mississippi River, when they shot 47 percent (27 of 58) at Mississippi Valley State.
  • Prairie View A&M was also consistent at the foul line, making 91 percent (19 of 21) of its free throws.

Bombs away!
  • Jeanette Jackson and Chelsey Rosier have proven themselves to be threats behind the 3-point arc, as both players rank in the SWAC's Top 10 in terms of 3-point percentage.
  • The duo is responsible for Prairie View A&M ranking second as a team in the SWAC in 3-point percentage (28 percent, 88 of 311). The Lady Panthers have shot and made more 3-point attempts than any other SWAC team.
  • Rosier's 3-point percentage of 34.8 (24 of 69) ranks second in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The junior guard from Tallahassee, Fla., averages 5.7 points per contest.
  • Jackson ranks sixth in the conference, having made 31 percent of her long-range shots. She has made a league best 36 triples on 116 attempts this season.

Jackson leading the SWAC
  • Senior guard Jeanette Jackson enters Saturday's contest ranked in the SWAC's top 10 in seven statistical categories. A preseason All-SWAC First Team selection, Jackson currently leads the conference in scoring (17.5 ppg) and is tied for the lead in assists (3.9 apg).
  • Jackson has made more 3-pointers than anyone else in the conference, having made 36 out of 116 attempts. Her average of 1.9 triples per game also tops the conference.
  • She is also reliable at the line, making, 78.3 percent of her free throws, good for fourth in the conference. Her 112 made free throws and 143 attempts are also league highs.
  • Jackson ranks second in the conference in minutes played (34.8) and assist-to-turnover ratio (0.9).

Stephens heating up
  • Shaneece Stephens has had the hot shooting hand as of late, as she has shot 63 percent (12 of 19) from the floor over her last three games. The senior from Port St. Lucie, Fla. topped 10 points for the first two times in her career this weekend, scoring 13 points in each of Prairie View A&M's last two games.
  • Over the last three games, Stephens has averaged 11.7 points per contest.
  • A less-than-stellar free throw shooter over the course of her Prairie View A&M career, Stephens has put in the practice lately. In PVAMU's last four games, Stephens has sank 80 percent (16 of 20) of her foul shots. That percentage is double her free throw percentage over her first 15 games.

Parks shifting into gear
  • Junior transfer Kaitlyn Parks made her first career starts in a Prairie View A&M uniform this past weekend at Mississippi Valley State and Arkansas–Pine Bluff this weekend. 
  • Over the past four games, she has shot 5-of-7 from the field, including five in a row in Prairie View A&M's games against Jackson State, Grambling State, and Mississippi Valley State.
  • Parks has averaged only 6.2 minutes per game this season, but has seen a 50 percent increase in playing time over the last three games.

Brooks dominates the inside game
  • Shamiya Brooks posted her fifth consecutive double-double in Monday's win at Arkansas–Pine Bluff, scoring 14 points and pulling in 12 rebounds. She has averaged 12.6 points and 12.2 rebounds  per contest during that five-game stretch.
  • Brooks ranks second in the SWAC in rebounding, grabbing an average of 8.3 caroms a game through 18 contests to go along with a scoring average of 8.0 points per game. Only Alabama State's Jasmine Peeples averages more rebounds among SWAC players, pulling in 9.6 per game.
  • She is also second in the conference in blocked shots, swatting away an average of 1.7 per game. Peeples leads the conference in that category with 3.1 blocks per contest.
  • Brooks has been especially helpful on the offensive glass, averaging a league-best 4.3 rebounds on the offensive end of the court. Those offensive rebounds have led to some easy baskets for Brooks, who ranks fourth in the SWAC with a .508 field-goal percentage (62 of 122).
  • Brooks is averaging a double-double in SWAC play with 10.7 points and 9.1 rebounds per conference game. She has shot 59 percent (32 of 54) in Prairie View A&M's seven conference games.

Home cooking
  • The Lady Panthers have been unstoppable at home this season, averaging 80.0 points per game in four contests this season at William J. Nicks Arena. They defeat visiting opponents by nearly 25 points (24.8 points) per game on "the Hill."
  • The Lady Panthers have shot 46 percent (119 of 260) from the floor in their four home games this season, and are shooting 31 percent (21 of 68) from 3-point range.
  • Jeanette Jackson has averaged 17.3 points and 4.3 assists at home this season, while Shamiya Brooks has averaged a double-double with 12.0 points and 12.0 rebounds per game at home this season.
  • Brooks has averaged 5.5 offensive rebounds per home game, and leads the team by shooting 60 percent (22 of 37) on the Lady Panthers' home floor.
  • When only Prairie View A&M's three conference games at home are considered, the Lady Panthers still ease to victory by an average of 15.7 points per game.
  • The Lady Panthers have outshot their conference opponents 44 percent (82 of 188) to 34 percent (69 of 206) at home.

Hey (Lady) Bulldog
  • The Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A&M enter Saturday's contest with a record of 4-14, and are aiming to snap a two-game losing streak. Alabama A&M is 3-4 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
  • Alabama A&M dropped a pair of home games last weekend to Southern and Alcorn State. The Lady Bulldogs are seeking their first win since January 17 when they defeated in-state rival Alabama State 59-50 at home.
  • The Lady Bulldogs are 1-8 on the road this season, with their only triumph away from home coming in a 63-58 win at Mississippi Valley State on Jan. 10.
  • Alabama A&M junior Janey Myles has been the team's leader since was added to the roster at the end of the fall semester. A 5-foot-11 forward from West Allis, Wis., Myles averages 14.4 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest, which leads the team in both categories.
  • Brittney Strickland, a 5-foot-5 senior guard, averages 13.9 points and 2.8 assists per contest. She ranks fifth in the SWAC in scoring. (Myles has not played in 75 percent of A&M's games to qualify for the conference lead.
  • Lady Bulldogs fans can expect both teams to shoot well in Alabama A&M's games. The Lady Bulldogs are third in the SWAC in field goal percentage (38.1 percent, 376 of 987), and are last in field goal defense, as opponents shoot 45 percent (511 of 1,136) against them.

Prairie View A&M vs. Alabama A&M
  • Alabama A&M is the most recent addition to the Southwestern Athletic Conference, having joined the league in 1998.
  • The Lady Panthers are 18-14 all-time (in their NCAA era) against the Lady Bulldogs. Alabama A&M is one of two SWAC programs that the Lady Panthers have a winning record against since the start of the 1981-82 season.
  • Prairie View A&M has won its last four meetings against Alabama A&M, having swept the season series in each of the last two years.
  • Alabama A&M is the only SWAC member institution that the Lady Panthers have never played in the postseason conference tournament.
