Lady Panthers defeat Alabama A&M 81-64 for sixth straight win

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Prairie View A&M senior guard Jeanette Jackson scored her 1,500th collegiate point and then some Saturday as she led the Lady Panthers to an 81-64 win over Alabama A&M.

Jackson (Las Vegas, Nev. / Sierra Vista HS) scored 23 points to lead four Lady Panthers scoring in double figures. She entered Saturday 1,486 career points, and reached the 1,500-point mark with her first basket of the second half.

The Lady Panthers (9-11) won their sixth consecutive game and improved to 6-2 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. Alabama A&M (4-15) saw its SWAC record fall to 3-5.

Prairie View A&M center Shamiya Brooks posted her sixth consecutive double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. She also had four blocks in the game, one off her career best.

Alexus Parker added 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the Lady Panthers, while Shaneece Stephens chipped in 10 points for Prairie View A&M.

Brittney Strickland scored 17 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Panthers never trailed after the first media timeout of the game, though they did need every basket they made in a hot-shooting first half to hold off a pesky Lady Bulldogs squad. Prior to halftime, Prairie View A&M shot 52 percent (15 of 29) from the floor, and made 10 out of 11 free throws (91 percent).

Prairie View A&M shot 48 percent (28 of 58) from the floor during the game, which was even slightly higher than what Alabama A&M's league-worst field-goal percentage defense gives up.

The Lady Panthers were finally able to pull away from their visitors for good with a 15-1 run between the 10:21 and 3:46 marks of the second half to give themselves a 73-54 advantage.

Asha Hampton-Finch added eight points for the Lady Panthers. Monique Abbs chipped in five points.

The win kept the Lady Panthers firmly in third place in the conference standings, a full game and a half ahead of Alcorn State.

The Lady Panthers return to action Monday when they host Alabama State. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
