LORMAN, Miss. -- The Alcorn State Braves pulled away from Prairie View A&M in the waning minutes of Monday's game and claimed a 68-62 win over the Panthers.
LeAntwan Luckett scored a game-high 26 points, including a 14-of-18 showing the free throw line, to help Alcorn State (2-12) even its record in Southwestern Athletic Conference play to 1-1.
Prairie View A&M's Karim York came off the bench to post a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds for the Panthers (2-13, 0-2 SWAC).
The Panthers led most of the first half and some time after halftime until Alcorn State tied the game at 35-35 with 15:37 remaining in the second half.
The Braves led by as many as eight points when Tyrel Hunt knocked down a layup and ensuing free throw to give the home team a 46-38 lead with 10:40 left to play. Undeterred, the Panthers clawed their way back, and would tie the game at 54 when John Brisco knocked down a jumper to cap a 5-0 run with 5:38 left to play.
Trailing by four with less than 90 seconds to play, York knocked down a pair of free throws to pull PVAMU to within one possession of the lead at 64-62 with 1:25 remaining. After Alcorn State missed on their next possession, the Panthers had a chance to tie with less than a minute remaining, but turned the ball over. Alcorn State would then seal the game at free throw line.
