Lady Panthers sweep Pine Bluff, run win streak to four matches

PINE BLUFF, Ark. – The tough pre-conference schedule is starting to pay off for the Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers.

The 17 straight losses to open the 2015 season now seem like a distant memory for the Lady Panthers, who won their fourth consecutive match Monday with a sweep at Arkansas–Pine Bluff.

Scores of the match were 25-17, 25-23, and 25-21.

Sophomore outside hitter MoKeysha Shanklin and freshman middle Calli Jordan Hensch knocked down nine kills apiece for the Lady Panthers (8-21), who improved to 4-2 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference's West Division standings.

Randi Hunter added eight kills for the Lady Panthers, while Mykaeli Franklin chipped in five putaways. Senior setter Ana Kiso tallied 24 assists and eight digs for Prairie View A&M; Paige Chuidian led the defensive effort with 14 digs, which matched a season-high.

Whitney Harris knocked down eight kills for the Golden Lions (5-25, 1-5 SWAC West).

The Lady Panthers overcame an early four-point deficit in set one and gave themselves a comfortable lead with a 12-2 run that stretched their lead to 23-15. In set two, the Lady Panthers led by as many nine points and had to hold off a furious Pine Bluff rally before taking a 2-0 match led.

In the match's final set, the two teams traded points after the 11-11 mark until the Lady Panthers pulled away with three consecutive points to take the 25-21 victory. A pair of kills from Shanklin accounted for two of the Lady Panthers' final three points.

The Lady Panthers return home for their final home match Thursday when they host Southern. Match time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
