Southern outlasts Prairie View A&M in five sets

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Southern Jaguars scored the last four points of the match Thursday to overcome a two-point deficit and stun Prairie View in five sets.
 
Scores of the match were 25-19, 20-25, 25-21, 25-19, and 15-13.
 
It was Southern's libero Diamond Williams who proved to be the unlikely hero when her long back-row attack was unable to be controlled by the Lady Panthers, giving Williams her only kill of the night and the Jaguars a season sweep of Prairie View A&M.
 
The Jaguars (8-18) moved a half-game in front of Texas Southern in the Southwestern Athletic Conference's West Division standings with a 5-1 league record. Prairie View A&M (8-22) moved to 4-3 in SWAC West Division play.
 
Randi Hunter and MoKeysha Shanklin recorded career highs for the Lady Panthers, knocking down 18 kills and 16 kills, respectively for the home side. Ana Kiso, the team's lone senior to be honored at Prairie View A&M's final home match Thursday, recorded 14 digs and a season-high 47 assists.
 
Defensively for the Lady Panthers, Paige Chuidian dug a career-best 18 digs, while Calli Jordan Hensch chipped in 16 digs, also a career-high.
 
Hunter blocked five Southern attacks, while Tisharra Thompson was in on a team-high seven blocks.
 
Melodie Malone and Chinasa Wkweariri knocked down 16 kills and 14 kills, respectively for Southern.
 
The five-set match was the first for the Lady Panthers this season to go the complete distance.
 
Prairie View A&M concludes its regular season Tuesday when the Lady Panthers make the short trip to Houston to face Texas Southern. First serve at the Health and Physical Education Building is set for 6:30 p.m.
 
The Lady Panthers have already qualified for the postseason SWAC Tournament, set to begin Nov. 22 at the Southern University campus in Baton Rouge.
