JACKSON, Miss. – The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers dropped their third consecutive contest Saturday, falling 65-60 to Jackson State.
Sophomore guard
Alexus Parker recorded her second career double-double, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds for the Lady Panthers, but it was not enough to keep Prairie View A&M out of the loss column.
Alisa Ross scored a team-high 19 points for Jackson State (8-15, 5-7 SWAC), while teammate Ke'ra St. John came off the bench to score a double-double of her own, registering 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Tigers.
The loss dropped Prairie View A&M (9-14) to 6-5 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. The Lady Panthers have not won at Jackson State since the 2009-10 season.
The Lady Tigers seized control of the game early in the second half when they scored seven unanswered points in a span of 51 seconds. Ayanna Hardy-Fuller's layup with 18:13 remaining gave the Lady Tigers a 39-30 lead.
Prairie View A&M would not make it a two-possession game until the final minute of the contest. The Lady Panthers put in several layups in the final minute that were answered with 1-out-of-2 free throw trips by Jackson State.
Ebonee Tate's putback with 21 seconds cut the Jackson State's lead to four points, but it turned out to be too little too late.
Jackson State came into Saturday's contest as the worst 3-point shooting team in the conference, but the Lady Tigers found their touch against Prairie View A&M. The home team shot 39 percent (7 of 18) from 3-point range in the game.
Meanwhile, the Lady Panthers, who shoot more 3-pointers than any other team in the league, eschewed the long range shot Saturday. Prairie View A&M failed to make a 3-pointer for the first time this season, but only took five shots from outside the arc, instead opting to move the ball inside.
Jeanette Jackson scored 11 points for the Lady Panthers, while
Shamiya Brooks scored eight points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Brooks reached double figures in rebounds for the ninth consecutive game.
Also noteworthy was the four points on 2-of-2 shooting by Prairie View A&M forward
Ebonee Tate. Tate was making her first appearance in a game since injuring her right shoulder the last time the Lady Panthers faced Jackson State on Jan. 17.
Parker's 21 points matched her career high, which she set last year when the Lady Panthers played at Jackson State.
The Lady Panthers return to action Monday when they visit Grambling State. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
