BOX SCORE JACKSON, Miss. – Prairie View A&M started out fast and held on for dear life at the end as they swept the season series over Jackson State by a 61-55 margin Saturday night at the Williams AAC.
Both teams traded baskets to open the game as JSU led 3-2 with 19:13 left. From that point, the Panthers turned on the jets and took control as they went on a 23-4 surge over the next eight minutes as senior point guard Tre Hagood scored 10 points during that span. Prairie View A&M would lead comfortably from that point over the nine minutes but Jackson State would come charging back with an 8-1 run to narrow PVAMU's halftime lead to eight at 36-28.
Jackson State would pick up where it left off to open the second stanza as they outscored the Panthers 8-3 within the first four minutes to trail 39-36. Hagood would end the drought with a three-point play at the 15:44 mark and sparked a team effort from that point to help the Panthers regain control.
Junior forward Charleston Dobbs and senior guard Montrael Scott combined to score eight of Prairie View A&M's next 11 points to put the team back on top by double figures (53-42) with 9:04 remaining. However, the team's once-safe lead came to a halt as JSU charged back and closed to within 55-52 at the 2:30 mark.
With the game on the line, defense would prevail as junior post Karim York and senior center Reggis Onwukamuche rose to the occasion with two huge blocked shots over the next two minutes. Still up by three with 36 seconds left, the Panthers committed an untimely turnover but made up in a big way on the ensuing possession as they drew a charging call by JSU and forced another JSU turnover several seconds later to regain control. The Panthers were money down the stretch from the charity stripe as they shot 5-of-6 to claim the win and their fifth consecutive win over JSU and second straight win in Jackson, Miss. for the first time ever.
Scott finished with 18 points, six rebounds and three assists followed by 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals from Hagood. Onwukamuche was a monster in the middle with seven points, eight rebounds and a career-high five blocks.
The road trip comes to an end on Monday as the Panthers will face Grambling State at 7:30 p.m. in Grambling, La.
