PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas –
Connor Wrye's grand slam in the bottom of the first inning provided the lone scores for Prairie View A&M in a 14-4 loss to Incarnate Word in the Panthers' home opener Tuesday.
Wrye continued his torrid pace at the plate, as the Tyler Junior College transfer now has two home runs, a triple and six RBIs in his first four games of four-year college baseball. He has batted .357 with a .929 slugging percentage.
Incarnate Word's William Triebes went 2-for-2 with three RBIs after coming into the game as a reserve to help lead the Cardinals (2-2) to the win. Designated hitter Christian Divelbiss and rightfielder Austin Huffman both went 2-for-5 with two RBIs apiece. Divelbiss knocked two doubles in the game.
Cardinals pitcher John Shull's lone blemish was the Wrye grand slam in the bottom of the first inning, but he recovered to strike out four and scatter only three first-inning hits over four innings. Relief pitcher Trevor Hardee picked up the win for Incarnate Word after striking out three batters in one and two-thirds innings pitched.
Michael Dewey took the loss for the Panthers, giving up five earned runs over four and one-thirds innings. Dewey struck out six and walked one batter, but also hit four Cardinal players.
Prairie View A&M's
Jordan Johnson gave up two earned runs over two and two-thirds innings of relief, while
Cassity Land gave up only one earned run while pitching the final two innings for the Panthers.
Errors once again took their toll on the Panthers, as they committed seven defensive miscues during the game. The errors led to six unearned runs for Incarnate Word.
The Panthers return to action Saturday when they open a three-game series at home against our Lady of the Lake. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. The two teams will also face each other Sunday at 1 p.m. in the series finale.
