Panthers Win 4th Straight As They Defeat Mississippi Valley 84-74

BOX SCORE

Prairie View A&M won four straight games for the first time since 2009 as Tre Hagood scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds en route to holding off a feisty Mississippi Valley squad inside the William J. Nicks Building Saturday evening.

Prairie View A&M hit the ground running from the opening tip as Tre Hagood and Montrael Scott were too much for the Delta Devils on the offensive end as the duo combined to score 12 of the team's 14 points during an early 14-6 surge at the 16:07 mark.

Things would begin to slow down for the Panthers as they committed several untimely turnovers over the next five minutes which allowed MVSU to claw back into the contest.  MVSU outscored the Panthers 12-7 during that span to draw within 21-18 with 11:32 remaining but the Panthers regained their composure and went on a 22-5 run to up the margin to 43-23 with 4:21 remaining.  However, Mississippi Valley State refused to go away as they put together a hot streak over the final four minutes to cut PVAMU's lead to 47-36 at the half.

Prairie View A&M would struggle to open the second half as they were held scoreless over a four-minute span while MVSU outscored them 10-0 to close within 47-46.  Junior guard Jayrn Johnson's free throw with 15:59 remaining ended the Panthers' scoring drought and the Panthers found new life off the bench as junior forward Charleston Dobbs scored six straight points for a 54-48 advantage at the 14:50 mark.

The scoring would be brief though as MVSU clawed its way back into the game and took its first lead of the night as a three-point play by Jeffrey Simmons led to a 55-54 Delta Devil advantage with 13:06 on the clock.  A basket by Hagood quickly reversed the game back in PVAMU's favor followed by a mid-range jumper from freshman Zach Hamilton and a hard-fought post move from senior Reggis Onwukamuche.  MVSU was forced to call a timeout with 10:27 left after senior guard John Brisco's basket led to a 62-55 Panther advantage.

The lead stretched to 66-57 after baskets from Scott and Hagood with 9:25 left and the Panthers kept their foot on the defensive gas pedal which in turn helped out the offense as they found themselves back ahead by double digits (77-65) with 3:36 remaining after a free throw from Hamilton and a layup from Scott.  From that point, the Panthers never looked back as they swept the season series over the Delta Devils for only the second time since 2010.

Hagood scored 22 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out six assists while Brisco added 16 points and five steals.  Montrael Scott scored 13 points while Onwukamuche continued his stellar defensive play in the paint with five blocks and 11 rebounds.

Prairie View A&M is back in action on Monday as they'll battle Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 7:30 p.m. inside the Baby Dome.
