PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers led from start to finish Saturday as they cruised to a 69-50 win over the visiting Delta Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State.
Â
Alexus Parker and
Shamiya Brooks both turned in double-double performances for the Lady Panthers, while teammate
Asha Hampton-Finch scored a career-high 17 points as Prairie View A&M won its second consecutive game and completed a season sweep of Mississippi Valley State.
Â
The win improved Prairie View A&M (11-14) to 8-5 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, which pulled the Lady Panthers into a third-place tie with Alabama State. The Lady Panthers visit the Lady Hornets one week from Monday.
Â
Mississippi Valley State (3-22) saw its SWAC record fall to a league-worst 1-13. The Delta Devilettes have yet to win a road game this season.
Â
Parker poured in a game-high 18 points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Parker struggled a bit from the field, shooting 4-of-11, but her attacking style and strong interior play gave her several trips to the free throw line, where she was a perfect 10-of-10.
Â
Brooks came off Prairie View A&M's bench and scored 10 points and pulled in 13 rebounds. It was Brooks' 10th consecutive game reaching double-figures in rebounds and her eighth double-double in her last 10 contests. She also blocked five shots in the game.
Â
Christina Reed scored 17 points and pulled in eight rebounds for the Delta Devilettes, while Feleshia Walters chipped in 11 points and nine rebounds off the Valley bench.
Â
The Delta Devilettes kept pace with their hosts throughout the top half of the first period, but 7-0 Prairie View A&M run between 8:39 and 5:14 marks gave the Lady Panthers a 27-15 lead; from there, the Lady Panthers never saw their lead trimmed to single digits the rest of the afternoon.
Â
The Lady Panthers shot 29.7 percent (22 of 74), which was their lowest percentage shooting in a win this season. The home team countered that statistic by getting to the free throw line 29 times, making 24 of those shots for a percentage of 82.8.
Â
One factor in the high number of Lady Panthers shots was their dominance on the offensive glass. The home team pulled 24 of their 55 rebounds off the offensive boards; Mississippi Valley State recorded a total of 39 rebounds.
Â
The Lady Panthers return to action Monday when they host Arkansas–Pine Bluff. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
