Brisco's Career Night Fuels Comeback Win Over Alabama A&M For 6th Straight

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Prairie View A&M rallied from a double-digit deficit and rode the hot hand of John Brisco's 27 points as they won its sixth straight game by holding off Alabama A&M 75-72 on Saturday night inside Elmore Gymnasium.

The Panthers ran out to an early 14-7 first half lead behind the play of senior center Reggis Onwukamuche and six points from Tre Hagood with 14:39 remaining.  However, the Bulldogs responded to the challenge and regained momentum with a 20-4 run over the next eight minutes to claim a 27-18 advantage.

A trey from Brisco stopped the bleeding at that point and cut PVAMU's deficit to 27-21 as the senior from Longview single-handedly kept the Panthers within arm's reach as he scored the next 10 points.  Despite Brisco's efforts, AAMU remained red-hot behind 51 percent shooting in the first half as the lead was stretched back to double digits (43-31) after a dunk from Ladarius Tabb with 53 seconds left in the half.

After a 30-second timeout, senior guard Montrael Scott hit a much-needed three-pointer to draw the Panthers back within single digits at 43-34 as that would be the halftime margin after a missed AAMU basket at the close of the half.

The second half got off to a rough start as Onwukamuche was whistled for his third and fourth fouls less than a minute into the half.  Even though the Panthers lost a key component in the paint, they overcame the loss and put together an 8-0 run to draw within 45-42 after Wesley Afolayan's layup with 16:11 remaining.

AAMU upped its lead back to seven (49-42) nearly two minutes later but the Panthers kept charging as Tre Hagood got hot from the field and scored four of the next seven points to knot the contest at 49-all with 12:14 left.

After two ties from that point, the Panthers reclaimed the lead for the first time since the first half on Hagood's jumper with 9:49 remaining and turned the tide of the contest.  The Panthers outscored AAMU 7-3 over the next two minutes to claim a five-point advantage and held on to the lead like their lives depended on it as the Bulldogs closed to within one point on two occasions.

The Panthers lost their grip on the lead and AAMU regained a 63-62 margin with 4:33 left after a Bulldog three-point play but the margin went back to PVAMU 29 seconds later as Onwukamuche was inserted back into the game and connected on two free throws for the 64-63 margin at the 4:04 mark.

In a nip-and-tuck affair, AAMU's Nicolas West hit two free throws to regain a 65-64 advantage but a strong defensive effort by the Panthers led to four consecutive points from junior forward Karim York and a driving layup from Hagood for a 70-65 margin with 2:11 left.

AAMU went cold and missed its next two shots but a key turnover and PVAMU foul allowed AAMU back into the game as Tabb's two free throws narrowed the gap to 70-67 at the 51 second mark.  With AAMU forced to foul in order to stop clock, Hagood hit 1-of-2 free throws for a 71-67 lead but AAMU refused to go away thanks to its offensive rebounding as two missed three-pointers led to a Justin Colvin three-point play and a 71-70 PVAMU lead after the layup.

Brisco had ice water in his veins with a pair of free throws with 27 ticks left but AAMU's West answered with a layup to keep the Bulldogs within striking distance at 73-72 with 12 seconds left.  Brisco once again stepped up to the plate and hit two more free throws with nine seconds left for a 75-72 lead but the Panthers had to hold on for dear life at the end as AAMU had two opportunities to tie the game within the final four seconds but missed both three-point attempts.

Brisco had a career-high 27 points and was a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe as he also grabbed five rebounds and logged three steals.  Hagood kept up his solid play with 21 points, five rebounds and three assists while Montrael Scott led the team with six rebounds while also scoring nine points.

Prairie View A&M is nearing uncharted territory as they've won six straight for the first time since the 2008-09 season and only the second time since the 2002-03 campaign.  The opportunity to win seven straight games awaits the Panthers on Monday as the team has not won more than seven straight since a 12-game winning streak during the 1972-73 season.

Prairie View A&M is back in action on Monday as they'll battle Alabama State at 7:30 p.m. inside the Acadome.
