Six-run rally gives Panthers double-header split with Grambling State

(Pictured: Grant Dougherty, seen pitching en route to his third save of the season, knocked three hits and scored four runs during Saturday's doubleheader.)

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Prairie View A&M Panthers scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to stun Grambling State 8-7 and salvage a Saturday doubleheader switch with the visiting Tigers.

Carson Lee's infield single with two outs sent Cody Den Beste home to score the game-tying run, which was followed by a throwing error on the same play that allowed Walter Wells to plate the go-ahead tally.

Prairie View A&M (7-10, 3-2 SWAC West) dropped the opening game of the doubleheader 13-4. (Box score available here.)

The eighth inning meltdown by Grambling's relief pitchers squandered a fine outing by Grambling State's Ike O'Bear. O'Bear allowed only three hits through the first five innings and didn't allow a run until the sixth. He struck out six batters over seven and one-thirds innings.

Pedro Maldonado picked up the win in relief for the Panthers. He struck out two batters and allowed two runs over two innings to improve his record to 1-0. Grant Dougherty pitched a hitless ninth to a stunned Tigers squad to pick up his third save of the season.

The Panthers scored a total of seven unanswered runs after trailing 7-1 after six and a half innings of play in game two. Den Beste began the rally in the bottom of the seventh inning with a solo home run, his second of the season.

Dougherty, who played 17 of Saturday's 18 innings in right field, started the scoring in the eighth inning when he stole third base, and then came home when the throw from catcher Tray Bell was overthrown. Connor Wrye and Kevin LaHaie then knocked back-to-back singles, which was followed by Josh Jefferson knocking a double to centerfield, just out of reach of a diving Edwin Drexler. Wrye scored on the play, and that was it for reliever Brennan Williams.

The first batter Pruitt faced was Den Beste, who was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Wells then drew a four-pitch walk which sent LaHaie home to cut Grambling's lead to 7-5. Anthony Fernandez then grounded out for the second out of the inning, but it was enough to allow Jefferson to score and set the stage for Lee's big play.

Prairie View A&M's Jordan Stewart allowed five earned runs over six complete innings. Already a Pitcher of the Week honoree this year, Stewart was 2-2 coming into game and appeared headed for the loss, despite striking out six batters.

In addition to O'Bear's fine outing, the Tigers also squandered a memorable day for leftfielder Angel Peguero. Grambling's No. 2 hitter hit for a natural cycle, hitting a single, a double, a triple, and a home run in that order. His triple in the top of the fifth scored three runs. Peguero also homered in game one.

By going 2-for-4 in game two and adding a base hit in game one, Wells improved his hitting streak to 11 consecutive games. He has reached base safely in all 17 of Prairie View A&M's games this season.
