Lady Panthers Split Doubleheader With Langston

Peyton Simms Leads The Way With 7 Hits In 2 Games

Junior outfielder Peyton Simms combined for seven hits as Prairie View A&M split a doubleheader (8-10, 10-2) with Langston University on Monday afternoon in Prairie View.

In game one, Langston jumped out to an early lead and held off a furious late-inning rally by PVAMU en route to a 10-8 win.

LU scored twice in the first and led 4-0 after an inning-and-a-half due to an RBI double and a bases loaded walk.  Prairie View A&M would carve into the deficit as freshman Destiny Williams hit a two-RBI triple to score junior Jalla Johnson and junior Amber Sorensen followed by sophomore Alexandra Losoya's RBI single up the gap for a 4-3 margin.

The momentum was short-lived unfortunately as Langston scored twice in the third and broke the game open in the fifth with a three-run homer to lead 10-3.  PVAMU would fight back aggressively as freshman Kylar Ward-Flowers' infield RBI single in the fifth made the score 10-4.  Williams opened the sixth with a double and the lead was cut in half (10-5) after Simms singled home Flowers with one out.  Senior Alisa Navarro shortened the margin to 10-6 as her RBI double scored Jasmine Hicks from third.

With two outs in the seventh, Johnson singled on a full count and a fielding error on Williams' at-bat allowed Johnson to reach second.  Losoya continued the rally with an RBI double for a 10-7 score which led to a pitching change for Langston.  The change didn't pay immediate dividends as Simms' single to third scored Williams and allowed her to become the tying run.  However, the chance to score didn't materialize as the game ended with Hicks fouling out to first.

Simms had a monster day at the plate with a 5-for-5 performance which included RBIs.  Hicks was 3-for-5 at the plate with a pair of runs while Williams, Losoya and Johnson had multiple hits.  Monica Cartwright was tagged with the loss on the mound.

Prairie View A&M overcame a 2-0 deficit with eight unanswered runs to claim a 10-2 win over the Lions in the nightcap.

Both teams were scoreless until the fourth as the Lions doubled home a pair of runs for an early 2-0 lead.  The Lady Panthers answered in a big way in the bottom frame as their backs were against the wall with two outs.

Langston's second dropped fly of the inning led to Simms scoring from second base followed by Navarro's single to right which moved Hicks over to third.  Regan Richard knotted the contest at 2-all as her RBI single through the left side scored Hicks.

The Lady Panthers broke the game open in the fifth with an impressive two-out rally.  Amanda Ford, who reached on a leadoff walk, moved PVAMU on top 3-2 after Losoya's RBI single to left field.  Losoya increased the lead to 4-2 as an LU fielding error on Simms' hit allowed her to score followed by Hicks' RBI single for a 5-2 advantage.   Hicks moved into scoring position with a stolen base and the bases were loaded as Navarro drew a walk followed by Richard's single.

Pinch hitter Heidi Woodworth's RBI single to center scored Hicks for a 6-2 margin which grew to 8-2 as Amanda Ford returned to the plate for an RBI double to center.

Prairie View A&M put the game away in the bottom of the sixth as a fielding error allowed Losoya to score from third followed by Shelby Fellers drawing a bases loaded walk for the game-ending run.

Simms and Richard both finished with 2-for-4 outings at the plate while Ford drove in two RBIs.  Freshman Felicia Camargo earned her first career win on the mound with three strikeouts in six innings of action.

PVAMU is back in action on Wednesday as they'll face Houston Baptist at 1 p.m. in Prairie View, Texas.
