CONROE, Texas – Prairie View A&M split its first two games in the SWAC Round-Up as they fell to Alabama State and defeated Jackson State on Monday at Scrap Yard Sports.
Alabama State 7, Prairie View A&M 3
A five-run first inning doomed the Lady Panthers as Alabama State claimed a 7-3 win in the opener.
The Lady Panthers started out with two quick outs to open the first frame but ran into trouble with two consecutive walks followed by four consecutive hits, including a double and triple, to fall behind 5-0.
PVAMU loaded the bases with one out in the third and scored its first run of the game on Heidi Woodworth's fielder's choice RBI. Alabama State added a run in the fifth for a 6-1 lead but the Lady Panthers answered with two more runs in the bottom frame as Shontel Lopez doubled home Jazmine Hicks followed by Amanda Ford's sacrifice fly which scored Laura Martinez.
Alabama State scored once again in the seventh as PVAMU failed to score in the final frame.
Hicks and Lopez both finished 2-for-4 with Hicks scoring twice and Lopez driving in an RBI. Monica Cartwright dropped to 0-5 on the season as she was tagged with the loss.
Prairie View A&M 10, Jackson State 2
Prairie View A&M bounced back in a big way with a solid offensive performance to run-rule Jackson State 10-2.
A JSU fielding error opened up the floodgates in the first inning as it allowed Alexandra Losoya and Peyton Simms to score for an early 2-0 lead. A fielder's choice RBI by Kylar Ward-Flowers scored the third run as Hicks upped the lead to 3-0 after crossing home.
JSU added a run in the second off a sacrifice fly but the Lady Panthers remained hot in the bottom of the second as Lopez's RBI single to center scored both Hicks and Losoya for a 5-1 lead. Destinee Williams hit a full count home run over the left field wall for a 6-1 lead in the third but JSU gained a run back in the fourth with an RBI single.
Ahead 6-2 entering the bottom of the fourth, Lopez's bat remained hot as her sacrifice fly scored Simms, who reached via a leadoff single. Hicks, who reached on a single before Lopez's at-bat, stole second and scored the eighth run of the game on a JSU throwing error. Prairie View A&M put the game away in the fifth for good as Hicks' RBI double to center scored pinch runner Alexis Lang and Williams.
Hicks sizzled at the plate as she finished 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs. Simms went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs while Williams and Losoya also scored twice. Freshman Felicia Camargo improved to 2-0 on the season as she went the distance while allowing six hits.
PVAMU is back in action on Tuesday as they'll face Mississippi Valley State at 10 a.m. and Alabama A&M at 3 p.m.
