MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE 3,PVAMU 2 (9)
Game one nearly went three hours as Mississippi Valley scored the winning run in the ninth as they held off the Lady Panthers 3-2 in extra innings.
PVAMU fell behind 2-0 after one as MVSU scored on an RBI single and bases loaded walk. The Lady Panthers cut their deficit to 2-1 in the third as Shelby Fellers opened the inning by reaching on an error and scoring from third on a wild pitch. PVAMU played solid defense as right fielder Alisa Navarro threw out MVSU's potential third run in the fourth while freshman pitcher Sabrina Johnson escaped a bases loaded jam with a groundout. The Lady Panthers tied the game in the fifth as Fellers doubled to open the inning and moved to third on a sac bunt by Kylar Ward-Flowers. Heidi Woodworth laid down a solid sac bunt to score Fellers for the 2-2 tie.
From that point, it was tight for both teams as hits were hard to come by as Johnson and MVSU's Haley Young had a solid pitching duel going over the next four frames. In the bottom of the ninth, MVSU loaded the bases with no outs but PVAMU responded with a big force out at the plate as Navarro gunned down the winning run from right. However, MVSU hit another single in the gap to score the winning run and squeak out the win.
Jazmine Hicks had two of PVAMU's five hits while Johnson dropped to 0-2 despite only allowing six hits over nine innings.
PVAMU 7, ALABAMA A&M 5
Prairie View A&M saw a comfortable lead disappear early on before battling back with a vengeance as a three-run sixth helped overcome a one-run deficit in a 7-5 win.
AAMU jumped ahead 1-0 in the first on an RBI single but PVAMU responded in a big way with a four-run second led by RBIs from Amanda Ford, Navarro, Ward-Flowers and Destini Williams. However, the lead quickly disappeared as AAMU scored on a single, two RBIs via bases loaded walks and a sacrifice fly for a 5-4 margin after the second frame.
The score would remain the same as both pitchers took control until the sixth as the Lady Panthers finally broke through with their backs against the wall. With two outs, Ford doubled and pinch runner Laura Martinez stole third and scored after an AAMU error for a 5-5 margin. Navarro singled and an RBI double by Ward pushed PVAMU ahead 6-5 while Williams kept the rally going with an RBI single to score PVAMU's seventh run.
Relief pitcher Monica Cartwright was solid as she earned her first win after allowing only four hits in 5.2 innings of action. Hicks had another strong afternoon with a 3-for-4 day while Navarro and Ward-Flowers both had a pair of hits with Navarro scoring twice.
The Lady Panthers still have one more SWAC East game remaining as they'll face Alcorn State over the next month once both coaches agree on a location and date.
PVAMU is back in action on Wednesday as they'll host Stephen F. Austin in a single game at 3 p.m. in Prairie View.
