Prairie View A&M clicked on all cylinders as Monica Cartwright threw a two-hitter while the offense pounded out 13 hits en route to a 9-1 run-rule win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Friday afternoon.
The Lady Panthers wasted no time in scoring as freshman Destinee Williams led the inning off with a single and moved to third on Heidi Woodworth's sacrifice bunt. Peyton Simms loaded the bases with a walk and fielder's choice by Alisa Navarro scored Williams for the 1-0 lead. A wild pitch scored Simms for the 2-0 margin followed by RBIs from Shelby Fellers and Amanda Ford for a 4-0 advantage.
Alexandra Losoya opened the second inning with a leadoff triple to right field and scored on Williams' RBI single. The score increased to 6-0 on Simms' RBI single which scored Williams from third.
After a scoreless third, the Lady Panthers added a run in the fourth as Simms' single scored Williams, who reached on a leadoff single to left. With PVAMU on top 7-0 entering the fifth, UAPB scored its first run of the game on Paige Garcia's RBI groundout.
Prairie View A&M answered in the bottom frame and put the game away for good as Kylar Ward-Flowers doubled in Navarro followed by Losoya's game-ending RBI single to score pinch runner Alexis Lang.
Cartwright kept UAPB's offense grounded as she threw a two-hitter while striking out four batters for her second win of the year. Williams finished 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored and an RBI while Simms, Losoya and Ward-Flowers had two hits apiece. Simms also led the team with two RBIs.
The series resumes tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m. with a doubleheader.
