Prairie View A&M was on both ends of the spectrum this weekend as they claimed its first SWAC West series of the season as both games versus UAPB were decided in the final inning.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff overcame a three-run deficit with six runs in the final inning while holding off a late PVAMU charge to claim a 10-9 win in the opener.
Similar to yesterday's contest, the Lady Panthers struck first with a 3-0 lead after two innings of play on RBI singles from Amanda Ford and Alexandra Losoya. A fielding error by UAPB during Losoya's hit scored Shelby Fellers for the third run.
The lead quickly evaporated in the third as UAPB tied the game at 3-all but Ford's second RBI of the game swung the margin back in favor of PVAMU as they led 4-3 after the third inning. UAPB tied the game at 4-all in the fifth but PVAMU would fight back in the sixth as Kylar Ward-Flowers scored on a UAPB throwing error followed by Destinee Williams' two-run homer over the right field fence for a 7-4 lead entering the seventh and final inning.
The brakes would fall off for the Lady Panthers in the seventh as UAPB tallied five hits and scored six times as they were also aided by three PVAMU errors en route to a 10-7 deficit. The Lady Panthers rallied to open the bottom of the seventh as Alisa Navarro led off with a single and reached third after Ford's successful bunt single. Navarro made it 10-8 after scoring on Regan Richard's RBI groundout and Ward-Flowers drew the team to within 10-9 with an RBI but that would be the final score as PVAMU flied out to end the game.
Both Williams and Ford finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Jessica Long dropped to 0-2 on the season in a relief effort.
After letting one get away in the opener, PVAMU returned the favor to UAPB in the rubber match as they rallied for three runs in the seventh to win the series by a 9-8 margin.
Destinee Williams scored the game's first run in the first inning as she scored on Alisa Navarro's sac fly. UAPB jumped ahead 4-1 in the third as they began to heat up offensively but PVAMU kept the game from slipping away with a four-run fourth which was keyed by six hits and RBIs from Shontel Lopez, Amanda Ford, Jazmine Hicks and Amber Sorensen.
Once again, UAPB would regain the upper hand as they were aided by a three-RBI single to lead 7-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Lopez opened the bottom of the sixth with a double to left center and a RBI groundout by Ford scored pinch runner Tiffany Robertson to draw within 7-6. UAPB moved ahead 8-6 with a run in the seventh but PVAMU kept fighting as drama would unfold in the final inning once again.
Laura Martinez led the inning off with a double to left and Kylar Ward-Flowers tied the game with a two-run homer to right to knot the game at 8-all. Alexandra Losoya drew a full count walk and moved into scoring position after Heidi Woodworth's sac bunt. A passed ball allowed Losoya to move over to third and Lopez put the icing on the cake with an RBI single up the middle to seal the win and the series.
Lopez was sizzling from the plate as she finished 4-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. Sorensen, Williams and Navarro had a pair of hits while Williams scored twice. Sabrina Johnson pitched four innings of relief to earn her first win of the season.
PVAMU is back in action this Wednesday as they host Houston-Victoria at 1 p.m. in Prairie View.
