Weather Plays A Huge Role As Lady Panthers Fall To Houston-Victoria

| BOX SCORE 2

Prairie View A&M dropped a rain-shortened contest to Houston-Victoria Wednesday afternoon by an 8-5 margin in Prairie View.

UHV scored the game's first run in the top of the first as a sac bunt scored Savannah Crittenden from third, who reached on a triple.  PVAMU was on the verge of answering UHV's run in the bottom of the first as freshman Destinee Williams drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on consecutive passed balls with no outs. However, Williams never made it home as the next three PVAMU batters fouled out, struck out and grounded out.

With the wind blowing out, it didn't take much for the ball to travel as UHV hit two homers in the second to jump ahead 6-0.  The Jaguars moved ahead 7-0 in the fourth as it took an Amanda Ford solo homer over the right field fence for PVAMU's first run in the bottom half of the fourth.

The Lady Panthers began to show signs of life in the fifth as Peyton Simms hit a one out single and moved over to second after Jazmine Hicks' sacrifice bunt.  Shontel Lopez's RBI single drove in Simms for a 7-2 margin followed by Ford's single and an UHV fielding error which scored Ford and Kelsey Coronado.

The long ball haunted the Lady Panthers once again in the sixth as the Jaguars led off with a solo homer. PVAMU responded in the bottom frame as Heidi Woodworth led off with a triple to left field and made it 8-5 after scoring on Shelby Fellers' sac fly.

With persistent rain, thunder and lightning drawing closer, the Lady Panthers' opportunity to mount a late-inning comeback never materialized as the contest was called with the sixth inning standing as the last official inning.

Weather remained a factor from that point as game two was canceled despite a valiant attempt by the game officials and both coaches to wait it out.

The freshmen trio of Ford, Williams and Kylar Ward-Flowers led the way with two hits apiece while freshman Sabrina Johnson dropped to 1-3 on the season.

PVAMU is back in action on Friday as they'll battle SWAC rival TSU at 3 p.m. in Houston's Memorial Park.
