Winning Streak Comes To An End As Panthers Fall 77-73

Despite a 32-point effort from Tre Hagood, PVAMU's seven-game winning streak came to a disappointing end as Southern rallied back from a double digit deficit for a 77-73 win in the Baby Dome on Thursday night.

Ahead by 13 at the half, the halftime break became PVAMU's worst enemy as they opened the second half with six straight missed shots while Southern steadily clawed back into the game with a 6-0 run to trail by seven after Christopher Hyder's jumper with 15:58 left.   Montrael Scott would end the drought with a much-needed three-pointer which put the Panthers up by 10 at the 15:37 mark.  One minute later, the Panthers began to regain their shooting touch as Hagood nailed a trey and a layup for a 15-point advantage but the double digit lead would disappear as SU outscored the Panthers 24-7 over the next 10 minutes to claim their first lead (61-59) since the first half with 4:42 left.

A jumper by Hagood tied the game at 61-all but the Jaguars moved back ahead 63-61 after two free throws from Frank Snow with 3:40 remaining.  The Panthers were in comeback mode from that point as Zachary Hamilton tied the game with a big basket but a foul led to two free throws by SU and a 65-63 margin with 3:05 left on the clock.

The Panthers received a big break after an SU turnover and offensive foul at the 2:24 mark but the Panthers never had a chance to answer as they were whistled for the exact same thing 10 seconds later.  SU's Hyder moved the Jaguars up by four at 67-63 but Hagood continued to put everything on the line as his layup cut the deficit to 67-65 with 1:32 left.

In a matter of seconds, the Jaguars scored two baskets to claim a six-point (71-65) margin but once again, Hagood would pull PVAMU to within three as his trey from the top of the key drew PVAMU to within 71-68 with 26 seconds left.  With PVAMU forced to foul, SU made 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to move ahead 72-68 but Hagood once again showed his fortitude as his coast-to-coast layup with 18 ticks left pulled PVAMU to within 72-70.

Tre Lynch hit 1-of-2 for SU to move them ahead 73-70 and the Panthers had an opportunity to tie the game but John Brisco's trey fell short with nine seconds left.  Hyder's two free throws gave SU a five-point lead which was quickly cut to one possession as Hagood's trey closed the gap to 75-73 at the three-second mark.  However, SU hit both free throws with one second left to make it a two-possession contest which sealed the game.

It was a tale of two halves as Prairie View A&M went right at the Jaguars to open the contest as SU would only lead at the beginning before the Panthers established control.  It was nip-and-tuck most of the way but the Panthers finally found a way to keep the Jaguars at bay with a 14-2 run over the final three minutes en route to a 44-31 halftime lead.

Hagood scored 32 points, pulled down eight rebounds and dished out four assists.  Scott added 13 points while Karim York pulled down 10 rebounds.

The Panthers close out the 2014-15 regular season at home versus Alcorn State on Saturday evening at 5 p.m. inside the Baby Dome.  The team will honor its senior class during pregame.
