GRAMBLING, La. – Freshman second baseman Destinee Williams totaled seven hits and Jazmine Hicks hit two homers as Prairie View A&M split a softball doubleheader with Grambling State on Saturday afternoon.
In game one, Grambling State scored two runs in the fourth to break open a deadlocked game in a 6-4 win.
PVAMU opened the game with a two-run first as Williams scored on Alisa Navarro's RBI single followed by Kylar Ward-Flowers' RBI single which scored senior Shontel Lopez. Grambling State answered with two runs in the bottom of the first but PVAMU jumped ahead in the third as senior shortshop Jazmine Hicks hit a two-run homer to lead 4-2.
However, the lead was brief as GSU scored twice in the third to tie the game at 4-all and they added two more runs in the fourth to lead 6-4. PVAMU had runners in scoring position over the final two frames but failed to get them home as GSU won the opener.
Peyton Simms led the way with a pair of hits while Hicks drove in two RBIs. Senior pitcher Jessica Long struck out four on the mound.
Williams and sophomore pitcher Olivia Lacewell were a two-women wrecking crew in game two as PVAMU stormed out to a 12-1 run-rule victory.
Williams led the game off with a leadoff double and Hicks rewarded her with a two-run shot for an early 2-0 lead. With the bases loaded in the second, Williams cleared them with a three-RBI double followed by Navarro's RBI for a 6-0 lead after two innings.
GSU scored once in the third but PVAMU answered in the fourth with a bang as Williams hit a three-run homer to increase the lead to 9-0. The Lady Panthers continued their onslaught in the fifth as Ward-Flowers, Monica Cartwright and Tiffany Robertson recorded RBIs to seal the win.
Williams finished 4-for-4 with four runs and six RBIs while Navarro had two hits and two RBIs. Lacewell was too much for GSU on the mound as the Killeen, Texas native threw a two-hitter with only one earned run.
The teams close out the series on Sunday with a single game at noon.
