(Pictured: Walter Wells went 3-for-4 in game two of Saturday's doubleheader against Southern.)PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Southern University baseball team claimed two wins Friday at Prairie View A&M, winning by scores of 8-3 and 19-7.
The Jaguars handed the Panthers (8-21, 4-9 SWAC) their 10th loss in their past 11 games with the doubleheader sweep Friday. Southern (8-15, 7-6) tightened its grip on the second seed from the Southwestern Athletic Conference's West Division.
Southern's D.J. Wallace had a day to remember at the plate, as he paced the Jaguars with three home runs and eight RBIs over the course of the two games. By day's end, Wallace, the team's cleanup hitter, had gone 6-for-10 and added a triple, a double, and scored five runs.
In game one, the two teams were tied after four innings of play, but the Jaguars took advantage of four PVAMU errors in the top of the fifth to establish a 6-2 lead. The Panthers would get as close as 6-3 when
Carson Lee singled home
Walter Wells in the bottom of the fifth inning, but would get no closer.
Prairie View A&M pitcher
Alberto Aveytia pitched six and two-thirds innings in the opening game, giving up only three earned runs of the eight charged to him. His counterpart, Southern's Santos Saldivar, pitched a complete game and struck out 12 batters.
Jordan Foster pitched two innings of scoreless relief for the Panthers in game one.
Kevin Macias knocked two base hits and the game, and
Joe Benes collected his first hit of the season in a pinch-hit appearance in the ninth inning.
The Jaguars showed no signs of slowing down in game two, when Wallace and Gavin Webster knocked back-to-back home runs in the top of the first inning off Prairie View A&M pitcher
Jordan Stewart. It was Wallace's third home run of the day.
The Panthers appeared as if they would erase the deficit early when they placed runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the first inning. They got an RBI double from
Grant Dougherty to score Lee before the Jaguars snuffed the rally.
The floodgates opened in the third inning when the Jaguars sent 12 batters to the plate as part of an eight-run frame. A fielding error loaded the bases with no outs for the Jaguars, but it appeared as if Stewart would get out of the inning unscathed as he induced an infield fly and a strikeout on his next two batters. But the Jaguars had other ideas as they plated eight unearned runs in the inning.
Southern would go on to win by virtue of the mercy rule after seven innings.
Stewart would take the loss for the Panthers in game two, though he was charged for only three earned runs of the 11 he gave up.
Jordan Johnson and
Charles Philpott gave up four runs apiece before Dougherty pitched a scoreless seventh.
James Fontenot picked up the win for Southern in game two.
Wells went 3-for-4 for the Panthers in game two, while Lee and
Cody Den Beste each picked up two hits in the game.
The Panthers return to action Saturday when they conclude their series against Southern. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
