Incarnate Word claimed a midweek softball doubleheader over Prairie View A&M on Tuesday as they won 8-3 and 19-10.
In game one, UIW combined for seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings to win the opener by an 8-3 margin.
Both teams were scoreless until the third as UIW scored its first run on an infield groundout. Â PVAMU starter Monica Cartwright held the down the fort over the next inning as the contest remained a one-run game. Â However, UIW broke through the gate in the fifth with a two-RBI double and an RBI single up the middle for a 4-0 lead. PVAMU struggled at the plate as it took five innings until the team's first hit as freshman catcher Amanda Ford recorded an RBI double to right center. Junior Jalla Johnson drove in the team's first run three batters later as PVAMU trailed 4-1 entering the sixth.
With two outs in the top of the sixth, the game would slip away from PVAMU as UIW recorded a single and was bailed out by a PVAMU error to extend the inning. Â The error would come back to bite the Lady Panthers as UIW's Alex Zepeda drove in a run followed by a three-run homer from Brooke DuBois for an 8-1 lead. Â The Lady Panthers tried to mount a late rally in the seventh as Johnson hit an RBI single along with Destinee Williams' RBI single but it was too little too late.
Johnson led PVAMU with two RBIs and a hit followed by Ford's two hits and run scored.
A promising start gave way to a disappointing finish as UIW used an eight-run second inning to regain momentum en route to a 19-10 win in game two.
UIW moved ahead 1-0 after the top of the first but ran into trouble at the mound in the bottom half as PVAMU waited patiently and drew three walks which led to an early run along with a passed ball, wild pitch and sacrifice RBI for an early 4-1 PVAMU advantage.
The Lady Panther defense fell apart in the second frame as three consecutive errors led to a Cardinal run. Despite the setback, starting pitcher Olivia Lacewell persevered and the team had a chance to get out the inning with little harm with two outs but the defense committed an untimely fourth error on a routine throw which led to another run. From that point, the UIW offense came alive and scored six times via two singles and two home runs for a 9-4 lead.
PVAMU would chip away as Destinee Williams hit a solo homer in the bottom of the second to draw within 9-5 followed by Jazmine Hicks' three-run homer in the third inning to draw within 9-8. UIW scored once in the fourth to lead 10-8 and used a pair of home runs in the sixth to jump ahead 13-8.
The Cardinals crossed home six runs in the seventh for a 19-8 margin before surrendering a pair of late PVAMU runs by Alisa Navarro and Laura Martinez for the game's final score.
Martinez and Williams both finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs.Â
PVAMU is back in action tomorrow afternoon in Nacogdoches, Texas as they'll face Stephen F. Austin at 3 p.m.
