PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Texas Southern Tigers scored 11 unanswered runs Sunday, then held off a late rally by Prairie View A&M and went on to claim a 17-11 win over the Panthers.

The win gave the Tigers a series win over Prairie View A&M, as the teams split a high-scoring doubleheader on Sunday. By the end of Sunday's games, the two teams had combined for 94 runs during the three-game series.

The Panthers (15-34, 5-19 SWAC West Division) concluded their home schedule with a record of 12-13 at Tankersley Field. They will enter the Southwestern Athletic Conference postseason tournament as the No. 4 seed out of the West Division next week.

Trailing 11-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Panthers rallied for seven runs to cut the Texas Southern lead to two. PVAMU opened the inning with three consecutive singles, which set up a bases-loaded, RBI walk to
Walter Wells to score pinch hitter
Marlan Chatman.

The Panthers then added two more runs with consecutive singles from
Kevin Macias and
Angel Avalos to score
Connor Wrye and
Carson Lee, respectively.
Anthony Fernandez (pictured), who was making his first start in more than a month, then came up and knocked a bases-loaded double to score Wells and Macias to make the score 11-7.

Avalos would later score on a wild pitch, and Fernandez would come home on a sacrifice fly from
Cody Den Beste to conclude the sixth-inning scoring for the Panthers.

Senior pitcher
Jordan Stewart started for the Panthers and gave up seven earned runs while striking out four batters over four and two-thirds innings of work.
Grant Dougherty pitched the remainder of the game for Prairie View A&M.

Devin Konarik started and pitched five innings to get the win for Texas Southern. He exited prior to the sixth inning. Jakari Bass and Felix Gomez were unable to get any outs during PVAMU's big inning, while Frank Cruz IV picked up a four-inning save for the Tigers.

Avalos, Fernandez, Den Beste, and
Joseph Mack all knocked in two runs for the Panthers. Macias knocked three base hits.

Wells knocked two base hits in the game, which brought his season total to 50 for 2015.

The Panthers will play a makeup game at Incarnate Word in San Antonio on Wednesday. The SWAC Tournament is scheduled to start May 14 in New Orleans.
