BOX SCORE DECATUR, Ala. – Alabama State jumped out to an early nine-run lead and never looked back as PVAMU dropped its SWAC Softball Tourney opener by an 11-2 margin on Wednesday at Wilson-Morgan Park.
All-SWAC second baseman and freshman Destini Williams led the game off with a triple but PVAMU couldn't capitalize as they struck out twice along with a groundout. In the bottom of the first, ASU led off with a leadoff single followed by a stolen base to move into scoring position. A PVAMU throwing error led to the game's first run followed by an RBI double for a 2-0 deficit.
PVAMU fell behind 4-0 in the second after surrendering a two-RBI double. The third inning resembled the second as PVAMU fell behind early but recovered to secure two outs with runners on second and third. However, another throwing error led to two more runs followed by an RBI single for a 7-0 margin. ASU plated an RBI double in the fourth and scored its ninth run on a PVAMU fielding error.
Alexandra Losoya drove in PVAMU's first run in the fifth with an RBI double followed by Williams' sacrifice fly for the team's second run. PVAMU would hold ASU scoreless in the bottom of the fifth for the first time all game but failed to cut into the deficit with a scoreless sixth. The game was called in the bottom of the sixth after a two-run homer by ASU.
Shelby Fellers led PVAMU with two hits and a run scored while Olivia Lacewell dropped to 3-5 on the mound.
PVAMU moves into the consolation bracket as a result of Wednesday's loss and will fight for its life from this point as they'll play either Alabama A&M or Texas Southern at 5 p.m. and then turnaround to play at 7:30 p.m. if they win.
