Season Comes To A Close After Tourney Loss To Alabama A&M

DECATUR, Ala. – Prairie View A&M's season came to a disappointing end as they fell 13-5 to Alabama A&M in the elimination round of the 2015 SWAC Softball Tournament at Wilson-Morgan Park.

PVAMU surrendered a run in the top of the first but regained the run in the bottom frame after Alisa Navarro's RBI single which scored Destinee Williams.  Similar to yesterday's tourney opener and throughout the season, PVAMU's two-out jinx continued as AAMU loaded the bases with two outs and crossed home two runs with an RBI double to lead 3-1 entering the third.

AAMU led the third inning off with a double to left and had a runner on third before a walk led to a PVAMU pitching change.  Reliever Sabrina Johnson forced a groundout but a run scored on the play to extend AAMU's lead to 4-1.  The Lady Panthers would score once in the bottom of the third as Jazmine Hicks' RBI single scored Navarro from second base.

Trailing only 4-2 entering the fourth with one out, PVAMU ran into trouble as AAMU's Viridiana Ramos hit a two-RBI double for a 6-2 deficit.  PVAMU didn't score in the bottom frame and fell victim to another two-out hole in the fifth as a walk and an error in the outfield led to two runners on base.  An infield error on the next play scored two runs and led to another pitching change as Monica Cartwright replaced Johnson.  Back-to-back RBI singles by Tiana Sanders and Ramos extended PVAMU's deficit to 10-2 entering the bottom of the fifth.

PVAMU continued to fight as Williams led the bottom of the fifth off with a single and stole second.  A Peyton Simms' walk and stolen base led to a scoring opportunity as Williams scored on an AAMU error.  Hicks doubled in Simms for a 10-4 margin but AAMU tacked on three more runs in the sixth to trigger the run-rule as they held PVAMU to a Williams' RBI as the game and season came to a close.

Hicks and Navarro finished their careers with two hits apiece with Hicks driving in two runs and Navarro one.  Williams also finished 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Jessica Long was tagged with the loss in 2.1 innings of action.
