CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- The Prairie View A&M Panthers fought hard but fell in three sets Tuesday at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Islanders took the match by scores of 25-14, 25-12, and 25-14.
Kirstee McGarva led the Islanders with a match-high 11 kills. Kristyn Nicholson recorded 31 assists and 19 digs for the Corpus Christi.
Sydney Walker knocked down five kills for Prairie View A&M, followed by
Randi Hunter, who added four kills.
Ana Kiso led the Lady Panthers with 11 assists.
Defensively,
Paige Chuidian led the Lady Panthers with 13 digs, followed by freshman
Marina Martinez, who dug 10 opposition attacks.
The Islanders took control early in each of the sets, though they found their visitors tough to shake in set two. However, the home team used a 7-1 run to establish a 14-7 lead in the middle set.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was the seventh Southland opponent the Lady Panthers have faced this season. Of Prairie View A&M's 13 matches played in 2015, eight have been against teams from the Southland.
The Lady Panthers return to action Thursday when they host Texas-Rio Grande Valley at Prairie View A&M's William J. Nicks Arena. Texas-Rio Grande Valley is in its first year as an institution after the University of Texas-Pan American merged with the University of Texas at Brownsville.
UTRGV is a continuation of the Texas-Pan American athletics program, which competed at the NCAA Division I level. Texas-Brownsville won two NAIA Volleyball championships in 2011 and 2013.
First serve between the Lady Panthers and Vaqueros on Thursday is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
