Late Run Propels Alcorn State Past PVAMU In SWAC Opener

Zach Hamilton's career-high of 31 points led a gutsy Prairie View A&M performance on the hardwood but the Panthers came up short at the end as a 6-0 run in the final minute by Alcorn State proved to be the difference in a 73-70 loss on Saturday in the William J. Nicks Building.

Hamilton came out on fire as he scored 11 of PVAMU's first 15 points to open the game.  After Hamilton's surge, Alcorn State built a five-point lead (20-15) by virtue of a 5-0 run midway through the first half but baskets by Malik Amos and Admassu Williams along with Hamilton's hot three-point shooting tied the game at 27-all at the 3:06 mark.  Tamarcio Wilson regained the lead for Alcorn State with a trey but solid defense by the Panthers and late points from Hamilton and Karim York sent the Panthers into the half ahead 31-30.

The Braves opened up the second stanza with an 11-5 run to lead 44-36 five minutes in but consecutive baskets by Jordan Giddings and a trey from Hamilton tied the contest at 44.  From there, the contest would resemble a tug-of-war as the most any team would lead by of a 9-2 run.

ASU's Octavius Brown knotted the contest at 65-all with a jumper at the 1:47 mark and a PVAMU turnover and foul led to two ASU free throws and a 67-65 lead by Patrick Onwenu with 1:11 left.  The Panthers missed their next two shot attempts with the latter blocked by ASU and directly leading to a Brave layup on a fast break. An untimely PVAMU turnover and foul on the ensuing possession led to two additional ASU free throws and a 71-65 deficit with 23 seconds left which was just enough for ASU to close out the game.

Hamilton led the Panthers with a career night of 31 points on 6-of-7 three-pointers.  Both Williams and Giddings followed with 10 points apiece while Karim York had seven rebounds.

The Panthers are back in action on Monday night versus Southern at 7:30 p.m. in the Baby Dome.
