Late run propels Texas Southern past Lady Panthers

HOUSTON –
The Texas Southern Lady Tigers pulled away from Prairie View A&M in the fourth quarter Saturday and went on to claim a 72-65 win over the Lady Panthers.
 
TSU's Kiana Vines, a 6-foot-4-inch senior post, scored 29 points on 13-of-19 shooting to lead the Lady Tigers (7-6), who improved to 3-0 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
 
Larissa Scott and Lamaria Cole tallied 13 points apiece for Prairie View A&M (5-7, 1-2 SWAC). Jeronia Allen scored 12 points for the Lady Panthers on 6-of-10 shooting, while pulling in a team-high seven rebounds.
 
Chelsey Rosier came off the bench and scored a season-high nine points for Prairie View A&M, shooting 3-for-4 from the 3-point circle. Alexus Parker and Tori Carter chipped in eight points for the Lady Panthers.
 
The Lady Tigers defeated Prairie View A&M for the sixth time in the last eight meetings since snapping the Lady Panthers' 15-game winning streak on Jan. 6, 2013.
 
Brianna Sidney scored 16 points for TSU, while Toni Cheadle added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Lady Tigers.
 
The Lady Panthers return to action next Saturday when they visit Grambling State. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Texas Southern jumped out to a 7-2 lead barely two and half minutes into the game. The Lady Tigers finished the last 3:30 of the first period with another 7-2 run to stretch their quarter lead to 19-11.
  • The Lady Tigers held a 12-point lead a minute into the second quarter, but the Lady Panthers roared back with 14-3 run, cutting the TSU lead to 26-25 on Allen's fast-break jumper with 5:15 left in the half.
  • TSU then responded with 12-0 run to stretch the Lady Tigers' lead back to 13.
  • Prairie View A&M committed five offensive fouls for their nine first-half turnovers. TSU committed only four fouls in the first half.
  • The Lady Tigers took a six-point lead into halftime, and led by three at the end of the third quarter.
  • Tori Carter scored the first three points of the fourth quarter to tie the game at 55 with 7:36 remaining.
  • TSU again responded with a 10-0 run and stretching the Tiger lead to 65-55 when Vines hit a layup and ensuing free throw with 4:55 remaining.
  • Texas Southern outscored Prairie View A&M 25-15 in points off turnovers and 38-22 in points in the paint.
