The Prairie View A&M University football team lost their home finale to Southern 44-34 in another exciting game at Panther Stadium.
Â
The Panthers (6-4 overall, 6-2 SWAC) saw a seven-game home winning streak end and while hopes for a SWAC title ended Saturday, Prairie View A&M is still eligible for an at-large bid for the FCS Playoffs.
Â
Jalen Morton completed 17 of 27 passes for 205 yards with one touchdown, 10 of the receptions were made by
Darius Floyd for 134 yards and a touchdown on a day in which 16 seniors were honored before kickoff.
Â
"First off, I want to tip my hat to Southern, and give them all the credit," said Prairie View A&M head coach
Willie Simmons. "They came in and showed why they are one of the best teams in the SWAC, and one of the best teams in FCS football. When you play a team like that, you can't afford to turn the ball over the way we did, have penalties the way we did, and expect to beat them. Again, we didn't play our best game. We were finally able to throw the ball, but didn't run it very well, and gave up too many big plays on defense."
Â
The Panthers scored first on the third drive of the game, as Ste'fon McCray scored on a two-yard run to give PVAMU a 7-0 lead with more than four minutes to play in the first quarter.
Â
Southern (7-2, 7-0) scored the next 16 points before Prairie View A&M struck back. Morton hit
Demarquo Lastrappe on a 73-yard scoring pass to cut the deficit to 16-14 with just over seven minutes to play until halftime.
Â
However, the Panthers would get no closer for the remainder of the contest, as late second-quarter touchdowns gave Southern a 30-14 lead at intermission.
Â
The teams traded scores in the third quarter. Morton threw an eight-yard scoring pass to Wiltz on the first drive of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 30-20. Following a Southern score, Floyd caught a 25-yard scoring pass from
Trey Green to cut the deficit to 37-27 with less than four minutes to play in the period. However, a Southern score pushed the margin back to 17 heading into the fourth quarter.
Â
Cameron Smith caught a one-yard scoring pass from Mc'Cray with just over three minutes to play to bring the Panthers within 10 but could not get any closer.
Â
"We didn't do enough to win, but I'm proud of the guys," Simmons said. "They continued to fight, never quit, and it's the first time we came up short. It happens eventually, you're going to drop one at home. I'm proud of these guys, proud of their resilience, and never giving up, continuing to fight to the very end."
Â
Prairie View A&M will conclude the regular season next Saturday at Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 2:30 p.m.
