Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Four Players Score In Double Figures As PVAMU Defeats Jarvis Christian

The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team defeated Jarvis Christian 82-57 in an exhibition game at the William J. Nicks Babydome.

Talisha Presley's 25 points led four players in double figures for the Lady Panthers, who opened the Ravon Justice era with a victory prior to the regular season opener at Rice on Friday, Nov. 11. Tori Carter scored 17 points, Dominique Newman and Jeronia Allen each had 10 for PVAMU.

"I thought our kids came out and played hard," Justice said. "I thought we did some good things early that I was excited about, but we have to finish games. Defensively, we have to get more stops, so we'll get back to the drawing board."

Although the game was tied five times early, Prairie View A&M never trailed in the contest. A free throw by Pressley with just over three minutes to play in the first quarter sparked a 10-0 run over a five-minute stretch, capped off by a three-pointer by Dominique Newman to give the Lady Panthers a 24-14 lead near the eight-minute mark of the second quarter.

Presley made a pair of threes late in the first half as part of an 11-3 run that extended the lead to 16 as Prairie View A&M led 42-26 at halftime.

Newman's second three of the game midway through the third quarter to give the Lady Panthers a 55-34 lead with just over five minutes to play in the third quarter. PVAMU never led by less than 19 the remainder of the game, making 10 of 20 three-pointers in the contest.

"I was really excited about that," said Justice of her team shooting 50 percent from three-point range. "What we've been stressing is making shots. You can't win games if you don't put the ball in the whole. I was excited to see how well we shot the ball. I would have like to see us score a little bit more in the paint, but they played zone the entire night, so hitting the outside shots was really pleasing to see."
