Panthers Lose Tough Contest At Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Prairie View A&M University men's basketball team lost a tough 64-57 game at Texas State Saturday at Strahan Coliseum.

Daquan Cook led all scorers with a season-high 20 points and tied a season high with seven rebounds for the Panthers (2-8). Troy Thompson scored 12 points off the bench, and Tevin Bellinger scored nine points off the bench and added a career-high nine rebounds for the Panthers.

"I'm really proud of the effort, the focus, and the concentration for the entire 40 minutes," a disappointed PVAMU head coach Byron Smith said. "I thought we rebounded the ball well. I thought we defended. I thought we were very tough and physical. We probably could have used a little more scoring, but overall I thought it was a really good effort. It's just really disappointing. I feel bad for my kids. They deserved that win."

There were eight ties and 15 lead changes in the game, as neither team led by double figures. The Panthers' 11-2 run to end the half, capped by a Thompson three-pointer, gave PVAMU a 29-28 halftime lead.

In the second half, an 8-2 run capped by five straight points by Thompson gave the Panthers their largest lead of the game, 49-44 with 11:19 to play.

However, a 12-0 run gave the Bobcats a 56-49 lead with just under five minutes remaining. PVAMU cut the deficit to four points three times down the stretch but could get no closer.

Prairie View A&M returns to action Tuesday at Louisiana Tech at 6:30 p.m.
