The words deja vu comes to mind when it comes to the Prairie View A&M women's basketball team, which has trailed at home on a couple of occasions and come from behind to get the victory in remaining unbeaten at home.
Friday night was a replay of the last three home games for PVAMU as it took a 64-60 non-conference win over Texas State in the William J. Nicks Building.
Texas State (3-6) hung tough through the third quarter Friday night, but it was the Lady Panthers that took advantage of a deep bench, effective ball-control and a defense that converted on every Bobcat mistake into points when they could
Prairie View (5-5) forced 21 turnovers and 20 points off the bench. The Lady Panthers shot 42 percent from the field and 58.3 percent from the three-point range (7-12). They also shot 50% from the free throw line (15-30).
Jeronia Allen topped Prairie View A&M with 21 points and 10 rebounds, her first double-double of the season. There were two other Lady Panthers that were in double digits. Hot hand freshman Dominique Newman had 20 points and Tori Carter netted 14 points. Parker only scored six points and had two rebounds, but managed to pick up just what she needed to achieve a 1,000 career points.
Texas State shot a blistering 63 percent in the second quarter, but couldn't shake the pesky Lady Panthers. After a 2-for 10 start in the first frame, Prairie View A&M went 5-13 to stay within arms length of the Bobcats, going into the half trailing 39-24.
The second half saw the offense come alive for coach Ravon Justice's team, bringing in hot-shot Newman to start the second half. A 4-for-4 effort from outside the arc, paced the Lady Panthers in the contention to win. Down by nine (48-39) going into the fourth quarter, the Lady Panthers took the 21-12 advantage in rebounds going into the fourth quarter only down by six.
Prairie View A&M took advantage of Texas State's miscues as they scored nine points from turnovers in the fourth quarter. The teams knotted the game for the first time (58-58), since the beginning of the game. The final minute of the game became very crucial to both teams as neither one wanted to go into overtime.
It was PVAMU who hoisted the guns as Parker hit her third bucket of the night advancing their lead to four. Texas State scored its last basket with 22 seconds left in the game and Allen hitting her last two free throws to take the 64-60 win.
The Lady Panthers will head to Nacogdoches, Texas when they face Stephen F. Austin on Tuesday, December 20 for a 7 p.m. tip.
