MONROE, La. - Freshman
Daneisha Hinton earned all-tourney honors as the Prairie View A&M softball team opened the 2016 season at the ULM Mardi Gras Classic.
ULM 10, PVAMU 2In game one, tourney host Louisiana at Monroe scored the first nine runs as they claimed a 9-0 win in PVAMU's season opener. Preseason All-SWAC second baseman
Destinee Williams finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs while
Daneisha Hinton went 2-for-2.
Shelby Williams and
Tiffany Robertson scored runs for the Lady Panthers.
Ashley Higgins fell to 0-1 as she lasted 2.1 innings before being relieved by
Monica Cartwright.
SFA 9, PVAMU 0PVAMU fell to 0-2 as SFA recorded a 9-0 win in the nightcap.
Sophomore starter
Sabrina Johnson (0-1) ran into early trouble as a 1-0 deficit in the second inning turned into a 5-0 one as the Ladyjacks took advantage of two early walks and two errors. SFA added a run in the third for a 6-0 lead but PVAMU couldn't crack the scoreboard despite having several runners in scoring position. With two outs in the sixth, SFA broke the game open and triggered the run-rule with a three-run homer.
Kiara Ross had two of PVAMU's four hits as Williams and
Peyton Simms had one apiece.
SETON HALL 2, PVAMU 1Seton Hall scored the game's first two runs and held off PVAMU for a 2-1 win in Saturday's opener.
Seton Hall opened the contest with a run in the first frame and added another in the third with two outs on an RBI triple. The Lady Panthers answered in the third as
Briana Knowles' RBI double drove in
Amanda Ford. However, the scoring would cease as PVAMU left runners in scoring position as they had a strikeout and a flyout.
That would be the theme of the contest for PVAMU from that point as they stranded a runner on second in the fourth and the game-tying run on third in the final inning.
Five players had hits for PVAMU while
Ashley Higgins went the distance while allowing six hits.
SETON HALL 4, PVAMU 2PVAMU dropped another heartbreaker to Seton Hall as they fell by a 4-2 margin in its tourney finale.
Seton Hall used a two-run homer in the second to move ahead 2-0 but the Lady Panthers answered in the third as
Kiara Ross hit an RBI single followed by
Destinee Williams' RBI for a 2-2 tie. However, the tie was brief as Seton Hall plated two more runs in the fourth with another homer.
PVAMU made it interesting in the seventh as
Daneisha Hinton hit a leadoff single but was thrown out trying to stretch her single into a double.
Kylar Ward-Flowers drew a walk but never got past first as SHU recorded the final two outs to seal the win.
Hinton and
Shelby Williams finished 2-for-3 while
Olivia Lacewell fell to 0-1 on the season.
PVAMU is back in action Friday at 3 p.m. as they'll travel to Sam Houston State.
