BOX SCORE 2 HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Prairie View A&M dropped a hard-fought doubleheader to Sam Houston State on Friday afternoon on the SHSU campus.
Game one saw Sam Houston State score four times in the first inning en route to a 6-2 win in the opener.
Sam Houston jumped on the Lady Panthers early as they scored three runs before the first out was recorded in the bottom of the first. The Lady Panthers scored their first run in the third as Briana Knowles hit a two-out double and was driven in on Daneisha Hinton's RBI. SHSU added two more runs in the fifth for a 6-1 margin while Kylar Ward-Flowers homered in the sixth for the team's second run of the day.
Hinton and Ward-Flowers both finished with two hits and an RBI as Ashley Higgins was tagged with the loss on the mound.
PVAMU dropped a heartbreaker in game two as its early three-run lead failed to hold as SHSU rallied for a 5-4 win in the nightcap.
The Lady Panthers quickly put behind game one's performance as Taylor Harvill hit a leadoff homer to open the second followed by Regan McIlvenna's single. Destinee Williams drove in the inning's final run as her RBI single drove in McIlvenna for a 2-0 lead. The lead increased to 3-0 in the fourth as Harvill reached on an error and scored on a fielding error several batters later.
Sam Houston State answered with a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly and jumped ahead in the fifth as a leadoff homer and a three-RBI double sparked a four-run frame for a 5-3 advantage. Destinee Williams opened the seventh with a leadoff homer to draw within 5-4 and Briana Knowles became the game-tying run as she reached base on a one-out bunt single. Knowles moved into scoring position and Daneisha Hinton drew a two-out walk for runners at first and second but the game came to an end as SHSU recorded a strikeout.
Williams finished with a 2-for-3 outing which also included two RBIs and a run scored. Harvill scored twice while Hinton drew two walks. Sabrina Johnson fell to 0-2 after coming on in relief.
PVAMU is back in action on Tuesday as its home opener will take place versus Jarvis Christian College. First pitch is at 1 p.m. as the team will wear pink jerseys and shoelaces in honor of breast cancer awareness.
