BOX SCORE 2 HOUSTON – Several big innings and missed scoring opportunities haunted Prairie View A&M on Tuesday as Houston Baptist swept a doubleheader at Husky Field.
HBU 6, PVAMU 1
In game one, HBU scored six unanswered runs in the first three innings as they claimed a 6-1 win.
The Lady Panthers opened the contest with a run in the opening frame as leadoff batter Briana Knowles was hit by a pitch and was driven in by Daneisha Hinton as she singled to center. HBU would respond in the bottom of the first as they drew a leadoff walk which turned into its first run partly due to a PVAMU throwing error which moved the runner into scoring position.
The Lady Panthers missed an opportunity to respond in the second as Jalla Johnson was thrown out at third on a fielder's choice while Regan McIlvenna was also stranded at third despite reaching the base with only one out. HBU plated two runs in the bottom of the second as PVAMU committed two costly errors and a wild pitch which led directly to the runs.
PVAMU's deficit grew to 6-1 after three innings of play as they would never recover despite having a pair of runners reach scoring position in the fourth and fifth frames.
Johnson finished 2-for-3 while Taylor Harvill fell to 0-1 on the season on the mound as she also struck out four.
HBU 9, PVAMU 1
Game two was similar to game one as the Lady Panthers fell victim by a 9-1 margin.
HBU moved ahead 3-0 in the second via an RBI double and a two-run homer. The Lady Panthers answered with a run in the third as Knowles doubled home Peyton Simms with one out.
PVAMU had a chance to make some major waves in the fourth as Harvill led off with a single followed by an outstanding at-bat by Destinee Williams which saw two potential game-tying home runs sail right outside the foul pole. Despite the near misses, Williams singled up the middle and reached second on an HBU wild pitch. Tiffany Robertson loaded the bases as she was hit by a pitch but no run would score unfortunately as Laura Hernandez flied out to center, followed by a fielder's choice in which Harvill was thrown out at home along with an inning-ending groundout.
HBU would begin to create separation from that point as they added two runs in the fourth to lead 5-1 before ending the game in the fifth with a five-run frame.
Knowles finished with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate along with an RBI. Monica Cartwright dropped to 0-1 on the season as she pitched four innings.
PVAMU is back in action as they'll head to Corpus Christi, Texas to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday and Sunday.
