Season Comes To An Abrupt End For The Panthers

HOUSTON – An off-day shooting performance by Prairie View A&M ended its season prematurely as Jackson State handed them a 69-51 defeat in the opening round of the 2016 SWAC Tournament at the Toyota Center.

Jackson State opened the game on a 10-2 run before the Panthers settled down and cut the deficit to 10-6 after baskets from Admassu Williams and Tevin Bellinger. In what would become a recurring theme throughout the contest, Jackson State responded and answered with a 9-3 surge to move up by double digits at 19-9 but once again, the Panthers found a way to claw back as Jayrn Johnson jumpstarted PVAMU's latest run with a trey followed by two jumpers from Karim York to narrow the gap to 19-16 with 10:57 remaining.

With 8:43 left, Avery Lomax's layup drew the Panthers to within 21-20 but Prairie View A&M struggled to get over the hump as every time they would get within one possession, Jackson State managed to regain its composure and extend its lead as they were up 29-22 at the 4:18 mark.

The Panthers would draw within five with 2:58 left after two free throws but Jackson State closed out the half on a 6-1 surge to claim a 35-25 halftime advantage.

The lid remained on the basket throughout the second half as PVAMU shot 1-of-14 within the first 10-and-a-half minutes as they scored only five points during that span en route to a 43-30 Jackson State advantage. Jackson State shot just as bad but the little they did do offensively helped push its lead as much as 21 points with 3:20 remaining.

The Panthers were their own worst enemy as they connected on only eight shots the entire second half en route to a 31.6 shooting percentage.

Both Williams and Jayrn Johnson led the way with 10 points each with Williams completing the double-double with 12 rebounds.
