Incarnate Word swept a wild softball doubleheader on Wednesday as the teams combined to score 54 runs in two games.
Â
UIW scored six runs over the final four innings in game one to defeat PVAMU 12-8.
Â
Incarnate Word rode the long ball to success early on as they hit a pair of home runs in the first inning for a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, PVAMU was on the verge of earning its runs back as they loaded the bases with no outs but came up short as UIW recorded three consecutive outs to end the threat. Once again, the home run ball hurt the Lady Panthers in the second as UIW's Alex Alonzo hit a three-run shot over the right center field fence to up PVAMU's deficit to 6-0.
Â
PVAMU would finally settle down in the third as
Laurisa Hernandez trimmed the deficit in half with a three-run homer. The offense would continue to click as
Amanda Ford doubled after Hernandez's hit followed by
Kelsey Coronado's single.
Peyton Simms battled to a full count and came up big with a game-tying home run over the center field wall to knot the contest at 6-all.
Â
The lead was short-lived as UIW pinch hitter Brigitte Gauvin hit a three-run homer in the fourth for a 9-6 margin. PVAMU would battle back in the bottom frame on Ford's two-RBI single which brought home
Kylar Ward-Flowers and
Briana Knowles for a 9-8 deficit. UIW plated three runs in the sixth to move on top 12-8 as that would end the scoring as PVAMU's rally would fall short.
Â
Freshman
Shelby Williams and sophomore
Amanda Ford led PVAMU with a three-hit afternoon as Ford also added two RBIs. Five pitchers saw action for PVAMU with
Sabrina Johnson falling to 0-3 on the season in a relief effort.
Â
Nothing went right for PVAMU in game two as UIW scored nine runs in the first inning and never looked back en route to a 23-11 margin.
Â
UIW recorded six hits in the first inning and jumped out to a 9-0 lead but PVAMU would respond in the bottom half as freshman
Daneisha Hinton hit an RBI single followed by
Regan Richard's two-run homer for a 9-3 deficit.
Â
UIW answered PVAMU's surge with 10 unanswered runs from the second to fourth innings before
Regan McIlvenna's solo homer in the bottom of the fourth. UIW tacked on three more runs in the fifth before a furious PVAMU rally which saw them score seven runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The Lady Panthers begin SWAC play this weekend as they head to Montgomery, Ala. to face Alabama State on Friday and Saturday. The SWAC altered its conference slate this season as the SWAC West teams will face a pair of SWAC East teams as opposed to the former format which had SWAC West teams play all SWAC East teams in a three-day period.
