Sam Houston State claims 16-5 win over Prairie View A&M

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Sam Houston State Bearkats scored 12 runs in the bottom of the first inning Tuesday en route to a 16-5 win over Prairie View A&M.

At SHSU's Don Sanders Field, the Bearkats' Josh Biles went 3-for-4 with five RBIs to lead the home team to victory. Every Sam Houston player in the starting lineup recorded at least one base hit.

Shannon Washington went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Panthers (6-13), while knocking home four of PVAMU's five runs. His bases-loaded double in the top of the third inning cut Sam Houston State's lead to 12-5.

Washington also had an RBI triple in the second inning to score Angel Avalos. Jaron Hicks' RBI groundout later in the inning would score Washington.

Greg Belton, the Bearkats' starting pitcher, earned the win after retiring PVAMU's first three hitters in order. (By pre-arrangement, the Bearkats used 10 pitchers – one each for the first eight innings and two in the ninth – which negates the rule that the starting pitcher must throw five innings to get the win.)

PVAMU starter Edward Robledo had an uncharacteristic rocky outing on the mound for the Panthers, as he was charged for 10 runs while over two-thirds of inning. Alex Richardson gave up two earned runs over one and one-third inning. Charles Philpott pitched the remaining six innings for the Panthers, giving up two earned runs and striking out seven batters.

Cody Den Beste knocked two hits for the Panthers, while Avalos and Kevin Macias (pictured) had one base hit apiece. Avalos scored two runs in the game for PVAMU, followed by Den Beste and Macias with one run apiece.

The Panthers resume Southwestern Athletic Conference play Friday when they open a three-game series at Grambling State. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
