Prairie View A&M and Alcorn State split a doubleheader on Saturday as PVAMU won the opener in thrilling fashion while Alcorn State closed out the series with a win.
PVAMU overcame a 6-0 deficit with a nine-run fourth inning to win the opener 9-7.
Alcorn State moved ahead 6-0 in the third as they were aided by two home runs and five hits. With PVAMU's back against the wall and the momentum clearly in Alcorn's corner, the Lady Panthers responded with a ferocious rally in the fourth.
Heidi Woodworth and Laurisa Hernandez drew back-to-back walks to open the fourth and Kelsey Coronado doubled home Harvill for a 6-1 deficit. Regan Richard drew a walk to load the bases and two batters later, Regan McIlvenna drew the fourth walk of the inning to force an ASU pitching change and a 6-2 margin. The change didn't matter as Day'zjah Pennywell's RBI single cut ASU's lead in half (6-3) but the rally was on life support as ASU managed a force out at home one batter later for two outs.
A wild pitch by ASU scored McIlvenna and drew PVAMU to within 6-4. ASU committed a fielding error for PVAMU's fifth run of the afternoon and pinch hitter Kylar Ward-Flowers drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases. Hernandez came back up to bat and drew her second walk of the inning to tie the game before Coronado's second RBI double of inning drove in three runs for a 9-6 lead.
ASU would score once in the fifth and Ashley Higgins came on in relief of Olivia Lacewell in the seventh with two runners on and no outs to seal the win as she forced ASU to foul out and strike out. The contest would end as McIlvenna threw out the runner at third for the final out.
Coronado led the way with four RBIs and a 2-for-3 outing which also included a run. Lacewell picked up her first win of the season as she came on in relief and allowed one run over 3.1 innings of work while Higgins earned the save.
Alcorn State captured the series as they won the rubber match 7-4.
PVAMU struck first in the bottom of the first as Laurisa Hernandez singled home Shelby Williams for the early 1-0 lead. ASU would tie the contest in the second with an RBI single and moved ahead 3-1 in the third after a two-run homer.
PVAMU missed a prime scoring opportunity in the fourth as a runner was thrown out at home attempting to score with two outs. ASU crossed home two more runs in the fifth to lead 5-1 and another two-run homer in the seventh upped the margin to 7-1.
PVAMU narrowed the gap in the sixth on Amanda Ford's two-run homer over the center field wall while Shelby Williams scored on an ASU fielding error in the seventh.
Ford drove in two RBIs while Williams scored two runs. Higgins fell to 1-7 on the mound.
