A 10-run second inning explosion by Prairie View A&M propelled them to a 14-3 run-ruled win over Grambling State in the series opener on Friday afternoon.
The Lady Panthers jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning as Peyton Simms singled up the middle to score Shelby Williams. A wild pitch scored the second run of the game as Simms scored from third.
Grambling State would score once in the top of the second to cut its deficit in half but PVAMU wasted no time in answering with a 10-run surge in the bottom. Laurisa Hernandez hit a three-RBI double to left center to expand PVAMU's lead to 6-1 while Kylar Ward-Flowers hit a three-run homer over the left field fence to up the margin to 9-1. Day'zjah Pennywell got in on the act as she hit a three-run homer for a 12-1 Lady Panther advantage.
The Lady Tigers crossed home two runs in the fourth but PVAMU continued to score as Briana Knowles was pressed into action in the middle of an at-bat due to an injury. Knowles responded with a solo homer while Hernandez's fielder's choice scored the final run of the contest.
Hernandez led the way with four RBIs while Ward-Flowers and Pennywell finished with three RBIs apiece. Ward-Flowers also batted 2-for-3 with a run scored. Ashley Higgins went the distance to earn the win on the mound.
The series concludes Saturday with a noon doubleheader.
