Alcorn State snaps Lady Panthers' win streak at four

LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State Lady Braves erased a nine-point deficit midway through the third quarter Thursday and went on to claim a 70-65 win over Prairie View A&M.

Norianna Haynes, the leading scorer and second-leading rebounder in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, posted game-high totals of 33 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Lady Braves (10-17), who improved to 8-9 in SWAC play.

Alcorn State overcame a quartet of double-digit scorers for the Lady Panthers (13-13, 9-8 SWAC), including Tori Carter's team-high 18 points and four assists. Larissa Scott tallied a double-double for PVAMU, scoring 11 points and pulling in 14 rebounds.

Alexus Parker scored 13 points for the Lady Panthers, while Lanikki McMillian added 11 points – including a 3-for-3 showing at the 3-point circle – in her return to her home state.

Though the Lady Panthers were denied a win in Lorman for the third consecutive year, they did receive some good news out of Montgomery, Ala. With Alabama State defeating Jackson State on Thursday, the Lady Panthers were assured of finishing no worse than sixth place in the SWAC standings, and avoid the opening "play-in" round of the SWAC Tournament on Tuesday in Houston.

The Lady Panthers conclude the regular season Saturday at Southern. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the F.G. Clark Activity Center in Baton Rouge.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Lady Panthers scored 18 of the final 20 points of the first period to take a 22-9 lead into the second quarter.
  • The Lady Braves would cut the lead to single digits in the second quarter, but PVAMU would end the period on a 7-2 run to take a 32-19 lead into halftime.
  • A 3-pointer by Monique Abbs gave the Lady Panthers a 35-23 lead with 8:14 remaining in the third quarter before Alcorn State ran off six straight points to cut the lead in half at the 6:17 mark.
  • Parker's only 3-pointer of the game with 4:46 remaining in the third quarter stretched the PVAMU lead to nine, but a 13-3 run by the Lady Braves gave them their first lead since the opening period with 41 seconds left in the third.
  • Carter reclaimed the lead with a jumper while getting fouled, and then made the ensuing free throw, to close out the third quarter with a 46-44 advantage.
  • PVAMU still held the lead for the first half of the fourth quarter; a 3-pointer from McMillian with 5:29 remaining gave the Lady Panthers a 57-52 lead.
  • Alcorn responded with a 14-3 run over the next four minutes and stretched its lead to 66-60 with 1:22 remaining.
  • Scott responded with a layup to cut the lead to four points, but PVAMU would get no closer.

GAME NOTES:
  • The Lady Panthers continued to be productive at the free throw line, making 78.9 (15 of 19) of their attempts. That was neutralized by Alcorn State shooting 19 of 21 (90.5 percent) of its free throw attempts.
  • PVAMU lost for only the fourth time in 13 games this season when leading at the half.
