CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Amanda Ford's go-ahead RBI double in the sixth inning lifted Prairie View A&M to a 2-1 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Sunday afternoon. The win marked the team's first over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi since 2005.
The day belonged to the defense as both teams were scoreless until the fourth as Jalla Johnson opened with a leadoff single and moved to second after Daneisha Hinton was hit by a pitch. Taylor Harvill's fielder's choice moved Johnson over to third and the first run of the afternoon was scored as she raced in on an Islander throwing error.
The Islanders answered with an RBI single to tie the contest in the bottom of the fourth to knot the contest at 1-all. Senior Monica Cartwright took the mound to open the fifth inning and forced three pop outs to force a scoreless frame.
Texas A&M-CC opened the sixth with two quick groundouts but Harvill broke the streak with a double to right center followed by Ford's double to right field for the go-ahead run. Cartwright pitched a scoreless sixth and had to hold on for dear life in the seventh and final frame as PVAMU went scoreless in the top of the seventh.
Cartwright struck out the leadoff batter but the Islanders made a late charge with two consecutive singles. They would hit into a fielder's choice and the leadoff runner was thrown out at third with runners on first and second with two outs. Cartwright held ground as she forced the game-ending groundout to second as PVAMU captured its first win of 2016.
Harvill led PVAMU with a hit and a run scored while Ford had an RBI, hit and walk. Cartwright picked up her first win of the season in relief as she struck out two in three innings of play.
The Lady Panthers are back in action next Monday as they'll host Abilene Christian in a noon doubleheader at PVAMU.
