Texas Southern defeats PVAMU 11-3 in series opener

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Texas Southern scored 10 unanswered runs Friday en route to an 11-3 win at Prairie View A&M.

The host Panthers took a 3-1 lead after the end of the first inning, but the Panthers were unable to score against TSU's Larry Romero, who pitched a complete game for the Tigers. Romero struck out seven batters and allowed only four hits as he improved to 6-1 on the season.

Cody Den Beste knocked a two-RBI triple – his third of the season and third in the last two games – to highlight the Panthers' three-run first inning. Den Beste, who went 2-for-4 Friday, scored Nick Gurka and Angel Avalos with triple; he later scored on an error.

Texas Southern's Blake Hicks needed only one swing of the bat to erase PVAMU's lead in the top of the fourth inning. With the bases loaded and one run already in, Hicks, a strong-hitting catcher, doubled down the right-field line to reclaim a 5-3 lead for the Tigers.

Hicks knocked in four runs during the game, while teammates Gerrick Jimenez, Jeremy Thomas, and Andre Moore recorded two RBIs apiece.

Prairie View A&M (8-18) saw its two-game winning streak snapped while falling to 3-9 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. TSU (14-14) improved to 8-5 in SWAC play and pulled even with PVAMU in the season series between the two teams. The Panthers took two out of three games in Houston last month.

Darrien Williams took the loss on the mound for the Panthers. The durable right-hander went seven innings and gave up five earned runs on four hits while striking out three batters. Williams threw 116 pitches Friday, while Romero threw 139 pitches over the course of his complete game.

The Tigers took advantage of walks and errors as they needed only seven hits to accumulate their 11 runs. Both teams committed three errors apiece Friday, while Prairie View A&M pitchers walked four batters.

Friday's game was the first baseball game of the 2016 to be broadcast on the SWAC Digital Network.

The Panthers and Tigers resume their series Saturday at Tankersley Field on the Prairie View A&M campus. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
