Cougars shut out Prairie View A&M in Houston

HOUSTON – The Houston Cougars limited Prairie View A&M to four hits Wednesday en route to an 8-0 win over the visiting Panthers.

Connor Wong went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs, while Jose Reyes knocked a pair of sacrifice flies to lead the Cougars, who improved to 25-18 with the win.

The Panthers dropped to 10-30 with the loss; they will conclude their season this weekend when they visit Stillwater, Okla., for a three-game series at Big 12 opponent Oklahoma State.

At Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park on the University of Houston's central campus, PVAMU's Alex Richardson made his first start of the season for the Panthers. He gave up only two runs through five innings, but ran into trouble in the sixth as the Cougars plated three more.

Richardson took the loss after scattering six hits and striking out two while giving up five earned runs. He fell to 1-1 for the season. Houston's John King earned the win, allowing only three hits and no walks over six complete innings.

Kevin Lahaie (pictured) was one of four Panthers to knock base hits in the game; he hit a one-out single in the eighth with Thi Mai on base as part of a PVAMU rally attempt, but the Cougars would leave the inning without a blemish.

Brashad Jones, Kevin Macias, and Josh Wells also had base hits for the Panthers. Wells hit a two-out double in the top of the second inning.

Josh Jefferson pitched two and one-thirds innings of relief for the Panthers. Jordan Johnson pitched the team's final two-thirds of an inning.

The Panthers open their series at Oklahoma State on Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
