Panthers fall to Oklahoma State in second game of weekend series

STILLWATER, Okla. – Less than 24 hours removed from being on the losing end of a two-hitter, the Prairie View A&M bats started connecting but the Panthers were still unable to score Saturday in a 12-0 loss at Oklahoma State.

The Panthers stranded 11 total runners on base as the No. 14-ranked Cowboys won their second game of the non-conference series and improved to 30-15. Prairie View A&M, which twice loaded the bases in the game, saw its record fall to 10-32.

Jensen Elliot pitched five and one-thirds innings and scattered seven hits en route to the win. He struck out four and issued one walk while keeping the Panthers off the scoreboard.

Prairie View A&M starting pitcher Charles Philpott gave up eight earned runs over five innings to absorb the loss. He struck out three batters and walked five. Joseph Mack pitched the final three innings for PVAMU, giving up four runs.

The Panthers knocked nine hits in the game but were unable to bring any of their baserunners home. Cody Den Beste and Angel Avalos hit consecutive two-out singles in the top of the first, but the Cowboys got out of the inning with a strikeout.

Trailing 2-0 in the top of the third, Josh Jefferson, Nick Gurka (pictured), and Cody Den Beste all hit singles as the Panthers loaded the bases with one out before Oklahoma State stanched the rally with a double play.

In the top of the seventh, Oklahoma State reliever Michael Mertz walked Kevin Lahaie and Jefferson to lead off the inning before he was replaced by Carson Teel. Teel would get all three of his outs by strikeout, including the last two with the bases loaded.

Den Beste, Avalos, and Jefferson all knocked two base hits in the game; Darrien Williams also had two hits, improving his team leading batting average to .350 on Saturday.

Prairie View A&M concludes its season Sunday with the series finale at Oklahoma State. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
