Â
PVAMU won for the sixth time in seven home games this season, its fourth by four points or less, executing through a back-and-forth final quarter to earn a 51-49 win Monday night over Grambling State.
Â
Jeronia Allen scored a season-high 23 points along with seven rebounds,
Alexus Parker scored 15 with five rebounds, and
Tori Carter scored seven points, had a career-high eight assists and three steals for the Lady Panthers. (7-10 overall, 2-3 SWAC).
Â
"We talk about who's going to be the x-factor," said Prairie View A&M women's basketball coach
Ravon Justice. "We never talk about points in our locker room. We talk about rebounds, assists, and steals, because that's the x-factor of the game. It showed tonight."
Â
There were eight lead changes in the final quarter, five in the final 3:05 as the Lady Panthers won their second straight conference game.
Â
Prairie View A&M led 32-30 entering the final period, before GSU (5-12, 3-3) completed a run that eventually led to a pair of four-point leads, the last at 40-36 with 5:46 remaining. A pair of free throws by Carter and a three-pointer by Parker tied the score at 41-41 with just over four minutes remaining before the teams began trading baskets:
Â
- A layup by Carter put PVAMU back in front 43-41 with 3:05 remaining.
- Following a GSU three-pointer, a jumper by Allen put PVAMU ahead 45-44 with 2:16 to play.
- Following a GSU basket, Carter's three-point play put the Lady Panthers ahead to stay, 48-46 with 1:37 to play.
Â
Grambling State cut the lead to one point twice down the stretch, but a putback by
La'Sha Haynes, her only points coming off her 11
th rebound of the contest, and a free throw by Allen made the difference.
Â
"La'Sha brings that effort everyday," said Justice. "She leads us in rebounds, and she's active around the basket. Her most important rebound was the one that got her only two points of the game. She went up, she was tough with the ball, and that's something La'Sha does for us. She stays gritty on the boards, and is a post player than can rebound in space."
Â
The Lady Panthers return to action Saturday at Mississippi Valley State at 2 p.m., with a live radio broadcast on KPVU 91.3 FM.
