ITTA BENA, Miss. – The Prairie View A&M University women's basketball team lost at Mississippi Valley State 64-55 Saturday afternoon at the R.W. Harrison Complex.
Tori Carter led PVAMU with 14 points,
Jeronia Allen had 13 and
Alexus Parker 10 as the Lady Panthers (7-11 overall, 2-4 SWAC) saw a two-game winning streak end.
"We got in foul trouble pretty early and that's hard to overcome," said Prairie View A&M head coach
Ravon Justice, who had three players foul out of the game. "The foul trouble put us in rotations we weren't comfortable with."
There were seven ties and four lead changes in the first 20 minutes. After trailing by six early, Prairie View A&M chipped away at the deficit to tie the score twice. A layup by
La'Sha Haynes tied the score at 11, and a pair of free throws by
Kayla Bell tied the score at 13-13 at quarters' end.
In the second quarter, there were five ties and three lead changes. The Lady Panthers led three times in the period, the final time on a Carter layup for a 23-21 lead with 3:39 to play until halftime. The game was tied 25-all at intermission.
In the third quarter, PVAMU scored six of the first eight points. Back-to-back baskets by
Mariah Campbell and Bell gave the Lady Panthers their largest lead of the day, 31-27 with 5:44 to play in the third quarter. However, a run by the Devilettes (6-11, 3-3) gave MVSU a 46-39 lead after three.
Prairie View A&M cut the deficit in the fourth quarter to as little as three points, 52-49, on a free throw by Allen with 3:21 remaining but could get no closer.
The Lady Panthers return to action Monday at Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a 5:30 p.m. game with a live radio broadcast on KPVU 91.3 FM.
